Penciled signature and 1856 date to front free endpaper of Elias Willits (1826-1881), an Illinois attorney, war claims agent, and county judge who settled in Monmouth, Illinois in his mid-thirties, but died early, at age 55 of a lingering illness. Publisher's round blind-embossed stamp to front free endpaper. 447 pp. plus 8 pp. adverts for Ivison and Phinney to rear. Rubbing, wear and some peeling to leather (front upper corner) but quite solidly bound. Beautiful marbled endpapers of red, orange, blue and grey, with two rub1through spots to these endpapers.
