First edition of this richly illustrated history of the American presidency, the deluxe American Bicentennial Presidential Inaugural Edition issued to commemorate the inauguration of George H. W. Bush. Thick octavo, publisherâs deluxe full blue cloth, the front board and spine stamped in gilt, pictorial endpapers, all edges gilt, silk ribbon bound in, illustrated throughout. One of only 1,000 copies signed by President George H.W. Bush on an inserted leaf to commemorate his inauguration on January 20, 1989. This copy is further signed by five other American presidents on inserted leaves: Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, and Jimmy Carter. Their leaves are drawn from other sources and not called for in this edition, making it a rare and possibly unique gathering of six presidential signatures in a single volume. In fine condition. Housed in the publisherâs matching blue cloth slipcase. A remarkable assembly of the signatures of six men who held the nationâs highest office. The American Presidents offers a concise illustrated biography of every man to hold the office, from George Washington to George H. W. Bush, tracing each president?s life, his path to the White House, and the defining events of his administration. First written by David C. Whitney and revised across successive editions by Robin Vaughn Whitney, it gathers portraits, photographs, and historical images alongside the narrative of the nation?s highest office. The six presidents whose signatures this copy carries span some of the most consequential decades of the twentieth century. Dwight D. Eisenhower led the Allied armies in Europe before two terms of Cold War prosperity. Lyndon B. Johnson was the architect of the Great Society and the Civil Rights Act, a presidency later consumed by the Vietnam War. Richard M. Nixon opened relations with China and resigned in the wake of Watergate. Gerald R. Ford steadied the nation in Nixon?s aftermath. Jimmy Carter brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. George H. W. Bush presided over the end of the Cold War and the 1991 Gulf War. …

Rare large Official White House color photograph of President Richard Nixon and his cabinet, signed by the President, Vice President Gerald Ford, and sixteen members of his cabinet. The full-length group portrait, taken by a White House photographer, shows the President and his cabinet standing in a row in the Oval Office, each having signed vertically in the image above his or her portrait. Those signing are President Richard Nixon, Vice President Gerald Ford, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Secretary of the Treasury George Shultz, Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger, Attorney General William B. Saxbe, Secretary of the Interior Rogers Morton, Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz, Secretary of Commerce Frederick B. Dent, Secretary of Labor Peter J. Brennan, Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare Caspar Weinberger, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development James T. Lynn, Secretary of Transportation Claude Brinegar, Budget Director Roy Ash, Counselors Bryce Harlow, Melvin Laird, and Anne L. Armstrong, and United Nations Ambassador John A. Scali, lacking only the signature of Postmaster General E. T. Klassen. Triple matted and framed. In near fine condition with some fading to the signatures of Ford, Dent, and Ash, some fading to the image, a few scattered minor creases. The entire piece measures 21 inches by 17 inches. A remarkable record of the Nixon cabinet in the final months of his presidency, uniting the signatures of the president, his future successor, and his cabinet on a single official White House image. Richard Nixon (1913-1994), the thirty-seventh President of the United States, assembled this cabinet in the final, embattled period of his presidency, as the Watergate scandal closed in around him. The photograph is doubly historic for including Vice President Gerald Ford, whom Nixon had appointed to replace the disgraced Spiro Agnew in December 1973 and who would succeed to the presidency upon Nixon?s resignation in August 1974, becoming the only person ever to serve as president without having been elected to either the presidency or the vice presidency. Among the signers are Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger, and Treasury Secretary George Shultz, figures who shaped American policy through one of the most turbulent chapters in the nation?s modern history.…

Typescript reproduction of the final paragraphs of Ford's 1974 Proclamation of Pardon granting a full and unconditional pardon to Richard Nixon, his predecessor, for any crimes that he might have committed against the United States as president. One page, typescript. Signed and dated by Gerald Ford, "Gerald Ford 11/5/79" and Richard Nixon. Accompanied by two glossy photographs signed by Ford. In fine condition. The signed pardon measures 7.5 by 5.5 inches. The photographs measure 8 inches by 10 inches. Exceptionally rare. Gerald Ford issued Proclamation 4311 on September 8, 1974, granting a full and unconditional pardon to Richard Nixon, his predecessor, for any crimes that he might have committed against the United States as president. In particular, the pardon covered Nixon's actions during the Watergate scandal. In a televised broadcast to the nation, Ford, who had succeeded to the presidency upon Nixon's resignation, explained that he felt the pardon was in the best interests of the country and that the Nixon family's situation was "a tragedy in which we all have played a part. It could go on and on and on, or someone must write the end to it. I have concluded that only I can do that, and if I can, I must.". …
