Forbes (1809-68) and Irishman John Tyndall (1820-93), both of whom were experienced alpinists as well as glaciologists. However, their views on the motion of glaciers were disparate, and a scientific quarrel over primacy and credit for discoveries continued even after their respective deaths. These papers include Forbes' articles on experiments on the flow of plastic bodies and analogies between lava and glacier flows, and on the plasticity of glacier ice, as well as Tyndall's observations on the physical phenomena of various Alpine glaciers, including the famous 'Mer de Glace', and a piece on the structure and motion of glaciers, co-written with Thomas Huxley. Several works by and about all three scientists (including works on Alpine travel) have also been reissued in this series.…

James David Forbes (1809-1868) was a Scottish physicist and glaciologist who worked extensively on the conduction of heat and seismology. He was a resident of Edinburgh for most of his life, educated at its University and a professor there from 1833 until he became principal of the United College of St Andrews in 1859. The book is a collection of papers that Forbes had written on the subject of glaciers, which he had studied extensively during his travels in the Alps and other mountainous regions. The book is divided into four parts, each of which deals with a different aspect of glacier theory. The first part discusses the nature and properties of glaciers, including their movement and the ways in which they shape the landscape. The second part focuses on the formation and structure of glaciers, while the third part examines the effects of glaciers on the climate and the environment. The final part of the book presents Forbes' conclusions on the theory of glaciers and his thoughts on the future of glacier research. This is an ex-library copy and is bound in a later library binding of blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and some staining from a removed label near the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small scattered marks and light soiling to the title-page. The principal library indications include a label with reference details and a 'cancelled' stamp on the front fixed endpaper, a partly removed bar-code label on the bottom of the front free endpaper, two stamps on the back of the frontispiece and a small stamp on the back of the other plates, some reference numbers and three stamps, including a 'cancelled' stamp on the title-page, and two stamps on the bottom of page 51.…
