Maria, daughter of Samuel Foote, was a famous actress at Covent Garden and the mistress of Colonel William Fitzhardinge Berkeley, by whom she had two children. Berkeley promised marriage, but in the end refused to follow through. 'Pea Green' Hayne came on the scene, was enraptured with Foote, and wedding bells were ringing. Berkeley stepped in to inform the new suitor of the two children & the new liaison was questioned by Hayne's friends. The day was named, missed, and again, until Hayne disappeared to the country. Foote won her day in court, and went on to marry Viscount Petersham in 1831.
