Uncommon small map shows Austria, Tyrol, Slovenia and Istria. With a small key in the lower right margin. Published in an Atlas Continuirter Atlas Portatilis Germanicus. J. Christoph Weigel (1654 1725) was a prominent Nuremberg goldsmith, engraver and printer. He worked closely with Johann David Köhler on his Atlas Scholasticus et Itinerarius (1712) on his publications and issued the Orbis Antiquus (1720) and the Reise Atlas (1724), in addition to his time charts, in his own right. With decorative origina.
This nice little map is fine artifact of late Czarist Moscow. It was chromolithographed in two colours (orange and blue) in Moscow by P. A. Maksimova in 1908. Every street is labeled and the outlines and names of major edifices and parks are featured, while tramlines are delineated in blue. An inset in the lower right corner showcases the Kremlin. The map is a fine example of contemporary ephemeral maps of the city, which were made as guides to visitors. The map folds into its original grey paper wraps which feature notes on the map as well as advertisements of the publisher's works. Due the nature of there use, such maps are today quite scarc.

Scarce folding map of Crain in Slovenia in 12 segments mounted on linen in contemporary slip-case is divided in three districts (Ljubljana, Postojna & Novo Mesto) and shows cities, villages, castles, roads, postal stations etc. The author Gottfried Loschan (1796-1857) dedicated the map to the Carniolan Agricultural Society (Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft in Krain, Kranjska kmetijska druzba). The society was founded in 1767 and after Napoleonic times confirmed by Francis I of Habsburg in 1820. It supported geological, mineralogical and other scientific surveys. Among its members were famous names such as Balthasar Hacquet and Janez Bleiweis. Loschan was born in Aschach in Upper Austria. He entered the Austrian army as a teeager and received numerous promotions until becoming a major commander in Treviso in 1848. Retiering soon afterwords he moved to Ljubljana, where he died in 1857. He dedicated most of his life to natural science and was a member of the Carniolan Agricultural Society. In 1852, when Loschan was still a major of artillery in the Austrian army, he discovered a new lead-mine close to the village Kappel in Carinthia. Two years later they found a new source of silver and gold in the same mine. Ljubljana in the middle. Slightly age-toned in the middle fold, hardly noticeable repaired tear on the right-hand side, otherwise in a good condition. Slipcase slightly rubbed and battered. This large and finely detailed sea chart focuses on the Gulf of Riga and the West Estonian Islands (also known as the Moon Sound Archipelago: Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, Muhu) and extends from Ventspils, Lativa to Meremõisa, Estonia, just west of Talinn. Prominently featured are Riga (today the capital of Latvia) and Pärnu, Estonia. Pärnu is further detailed in the large inset in the upper right, with its even grid of streets bound within fortified walls. With toponymy written entirely in Russian Cyrillic, the chart feature copious amounts of nautical information, including bathymetric soundings, the locations of shoals and hazards and magnetic declination. One of the finest attributes of the chart, is its inclusion of vignettes depicting almost three dozen lighthouses in the region, with the radii of their lights marked on the chart. The chart is based on exhaustive surveys conducted by the Hydrographic Department of the Russian Maritime Ministry, between 1843 and 1859. The Baltic Countries were then p the Russian Empire, and the area was of particular importance to both commercial shipping and naval strategy. Riga, Pärnu, Ventspils and Haapsalu were key ports and, vitally, the region guarded the maritime approaches to the Russian capital of St. Petersburg. The first edition of the chart was printed in 1862, while the present edition was issued in 1895, featuring many corrections and improvements gained from surveys in the interceding 33 years. The chart in any edition is very rare, we were able to locate only two institutional examples (a 1876 edition and a 1914 edition), both at the National Library of Estonia, and could locate no sales records from the last generation. Coello's scarce and large-format production represents the most important mapping of Puerto Rico of the 19th Century. Autor: Francisco COELLO de Portugal y Quesada (1822-1898). Place and Year: Madrid, 1851. Technique: Copper engraving with partial original outline colour, folding into original cloth and pastedown covers (very good, surface overall clean, some very mild staining to one horizontal fold, some minor separation at fold vertices and a few folds since stabili Code: 62376 Copper engraving with partial original outline colour, folding into original cloth and pastedown covers (very good, surface overall clean, some very mild staining to one horizontal fold, some minor separation at fold vertices and a few folds since stabilized, corners with tackmarks with minor loss to blank lower-left corner, some abrasions with minor surface loss to pastedowns on covers), 80 x 106 cm. This large and fascinating map sheet features the first accurate and comprehensive general cartographic overview oerto Rico. It showcases 10 maps, carefully selected from the best sources and edited by Francisco Coello, along with text by Pascual Madoz that provides a detailed description of the island. The map sheet was one of the most important elements of Coello's monumental project to map Spain and her overseas dependencies, Atlas de Espana y sus posesiones de Ultramar. The quality of the cartography and the clean, crisp design is superlative, being a true masterpiece of 19th Century cartography. All of maps of the composition are highly detailed, based on the latest advanced surveys and feature sophisticated topographical information and copious hydrographic data. The centre of the map sheet features the excellent general topographical map of the island, 'Isla de Puerto-Rico'; the regional map showing the position of the island within the Greater Antilles, 'Situacion de la Isla de Puerto-Rico'; and a highly detailed urban plan of the capital, 'S. Juan de Puerto-Rico'. The upper left corne dering of the environs of the island's second city, 'Contornos de Ponce', while below are the insets 'Contornos de Mayagüez' and 'Ensenada de Aguadilla'. In the lower right of the composition is an inset detailing the capital region, 'Contornos de San Juan de Puerto-Rico', in addition to two small town plans, 'Puerto de Guanica' and 'Contornos de Isabel Segunda de Vieques'. In the upper-right corner of the sheet is an attractive map of the far east of the main island and the adjacent isles, 'Islas Culebra y Vieques y canals entre ellas y Puerto-Rico'. The lengthy descriptive text that adorns the map sheet, written by Pascual Madoz, presents a fascinating essay on the demographics, economy, history and geography of Puerto Rico, backed by the most authoritative statistical evidence yet assembled. Unlike most such descriptions on maps of the period, Madoz's prose is quite lucid and provides a most pleasant and edifying read. Coello had a major challepresent map shee impression of Puerto Rico and its key regions. While the eminent cartographer Cosme Damián de Churruca y Elorza, had surveyed much of coastal Puerto Rico to an extremely high standard from 1792 to 1794, no overall accurate general map had since come into being. Coello had to methodically sift through the best regional and skeleton maps in the official archives and work his contacts to acquire high quality maps from which he could piece together an accurate and complete portrait of the island. In the 'Advertencia' (in the upper left of the map), Coello notes that he consulted numerous printed and manuscript maps. Of particular importance was a general map of Puerto Rico drafted in 1831 by Don Antonio Cordero, located in the Deposito Hidrografico; an excellent survey of Mayagüez, Ponce and Isabel Segunda de Vieques by Lieutenant Colonel Manuel Soriano; and a magnificent manuscript map of the far eastern end of Puerto Rico and the islands of Culnd Vieques, based on the surveys conducted by a Dsea captain, C. van Dockum. Francisco Coello, Pascual Madoz and the Atlas de Espana y sus posesiones de Ultramar Francisco Coello de Portugal y Quesada (1822-1898) was one of the most important and talented Spanish cartographers of the 19th-century. Born in Jaen, he was accepted into the Academy of the Special Army Corps of Engineers in Guadalajara at the age of 15. He subsequently joined the Corps of Military Engineers, seeing active service during the end of the First Carlist War (1833-9), and later in Algeria during the Spanish occupation (1844-6). Exceptionally precocious, in 1847, at only the age of 25, he was appointed Director-General of the Corps of Engineers with a promotion to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He also became the founding president of the Geographical Society of Madrid and a member of the Real Sociedad Geográfica de Espana. Coello quickly initiated a series of grand projects that were to dramatically revolutize the cartography of Spain and her colonial possessio Most notably, Coello teamed up with the politician, journalist and statistician Pascual Madoz Ibánez (1806 - 1870) in order to create the ultimate record of the geography of Spain and its overseas possessions. Madoz was a prominent figure who later served variously as Spain's Minister of Finance and as the governor of Barcelona and Madrid. During the 1840s, he was engaged in his passion project, writing the Diccionario geográfico, estadístico y historico de Espana, y sus posesiones de Ultramar (Madrid, 1848-1850), a comprehensive work detailing all aspects of the geography, economy and demographics of Spain, featuring statistical data of unparalleled breadth and authority. Madoz's project dovetailed perfectly with Coello's plan to create a series of extremely accurate general maps of each of Spain's provinces and her overseas possessions. Coello used his oversight over Spain's military mapping and his unfretted access to her nn map archives to source the best geographical informationuld write insigh.
