Jeste v temze roce slavil sve prvni uspechy s vlastnorucne postavenym letounem s nazvem Spin v berlinskem Johannisthalu. V roce 1913 zalozil svou prvni tovarnu na letadla. Stihacky, ktere zde stavel a ktere tvorily podstatnou cast vyzbroje nemeckeho letectva v prvni svetove valce, mu vydobyly znacny vehlas. Po valce s Fokker vratil do Holandska a tam v Amsterdamu Schipholu zalozil N. V. Koniklijke Nederlandse Vliegtuilgenfabrick Fokker. Tady pak vzniklo mnoho civilnich vojenskych letadel, jez se zapsali do historie. ,Letajici Holandan" je autobiograficky roman tohoto letce, skveleho konstruktera a prukopnika letectvi, v nemz osobne s patricnou davkou humoru popisuje svuj pestry zivot - detstvi genialniho rostaka, prvni zkusenosti s konkurenci v Johannisthalu, praci na uspesnych typech letadel behem prvni svetove valky i po ni.
