About the author: Ysbrand van Hamelsveld (1743-1812) was a Dutch Reformed minister and professor of theology. This radical Patriot had preached patriotism from the pulpit and even had called upon the male members of his flock to take up arms against stadtholder, William V. Forced to resign his offices after 1787 (when the troops of Frederick William II of Prussia crushed the Patriots), Van Hamelsveld became a professional writer and translator.

Two works in one volume. 8vo., (8 x 5 inches). Half-titles. Vignette title-pages. Engraved frontispiece and 4 double-page folding plates to first work; 5 double-page engraved folding plates, all after Simon Fokke and Noach van der Meer the younger (1741-1822). Contemporary half calf with speckled boards, the spine in six compartments, red morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with small gilt tools (hinges very weak, extremities scuffed or worn with some minor loss). Provenance: The Paul and Marianne Gourary Collection of Illustrated Fete Books "Splendid Ceremonies", with their small bookplate on the front paste-down. First edition of the earliest illustrated account of the old theater in Amsterdam, published in the year of its destruction by fire. The Amsterdam Schouwburg had been erected in 1638 on the site of the old Amsterdam Academy and was the first permanent theater in Amsterdam. Initially the theater saw 90 productions per year, during the 18th century it became more and more a place for opera. In May 1772, during a performance of Monsigny's Déserteur, a fire swept through the building, destroying it completely and killing eighteen people. Fokke's dramatic illustrations in the first work capture the outbreak of fire on the stage behind the scenes, the burning of the whole building illuminating the night sky with curious onlookers thronging the streets and bridges, and an internal view of the gutted theater. The plates in the second work illustrate the exterior and interior of the new theater. Simon Fokke (1712-84), brother of the author Jan Fokke, was an actor as well as a stage designer. He had designed the set for the opera Demostenes at the Schouwburg.

In den Warenkorb2 works in 1 volume. Large-paper copies of the first editions of two works on the schouwburg (theatre) of Amsterdam, the first on the old theatre, which burned down in 1772, and the second on the new theatre, which was built on the Leidseplein and finished in 1775. The large engraved plates show the exterior of the new theatre, together with the surrounding buildings and with people on the foreground, and the interior of both the theatres (the balconies and stages). Two plates depict the old theatre going up in flames and another plate shows the ruins. The text gives a history of both the theatres, including a description of the building process, the restorations and renovations, the staff, the stage equipment (lightning, decor, hoist tools, costumes, etc.), and also including a vivid description of the fire. The first work is often ascribed to Jan Fokke, but both works are also frequently ascribed to Myndert de Boer, who wrote the long poems in both works. With bookplates. Binding rubbed along the extremities, slightly worn at the head and foot of the spine.
