Only known copy of the 1784 nursery catalogue of the company of Isaak Moerbeek in Haarlem, listing the prices of several hundred varieties of flower bulbs, including numerous cultivars of hyacinths, tulips, ranunculus, anemones, and daffodils, alongside lilies, fritillaria, crocuses, irises, gladioli, peonies, and cyclamen. Ephemeral by nature, catalogues such as the present were often discarded after use. Although thousands must have been printed at the time, only a handful of examples have survived. We have not been able to trace any other copies of the present work. From the 17th to the early 19th century, Haarlem was the centre of the flower bulb trade in the Low Countries, with dozens of active nurseries shipping bulbs throughout Europe and beyond. Haarlem in particular specialised in hyacinths, which had become incredibly popular by the 18th century, surpassing even the tulip. This is reflected in the present catalogue by the large variety of hyacinth cultivars offered. Also reflected is the growing popularity and influence of the English landscape garden by the inclusion of crocuses, fritillaria, daffodils, and other flowers that were typically found in the gardens of country estates. The Moerbeek family had long been active in the field of horticulture, primarily specialising in tree cultivation. They were among the few families able to maintain a successful tree nursery into the 18th century. Their first nursery was located in Beverwijk, but around 1700 Pieter Moerbeek established a second one near Amsterdam. His grandson Paulus expanded the business to flower bulbs, after which the firm continued with both. Isaak Moerbeek, in turn, was a grandson of Paulus. Although his catalogue focuses predominantly on flower bulbs, the final page also mentions other plants, including legumes, asparagus, and pineapple plants, reflecting the broader scope of the family's horticultural activities. Isaak himself is mostly unknown, but his brother or cousin Paulus continued the company under the name "Firma van Simon en Paulus Moerbeek." The wrappers are slightly soiled. The final number of the date on the title page has been filled in by hand, the leaves have been unevenly trimmed, but without loss of text, the lower corner of p. 23 is torn off, but also without loss of text. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Berkhout, Lenneke. "De beste en kundigste enteniers van geheel Europa," in: Cascade bulletin voor tuinhistorie 29 (2020), pp. 14-16 (about the Moerbeek family); WorldCat 563692766 (1804 ed., 1 copy); not in Krelage; STCN. Contemporary half brocade paper wrappers with floral paper sides. Pages: 40 pp. …
