Small…, thick 8vo: [22],672,[673-674],561-588,[108],46pp, with engraved title page (by Romeyn de Hooghe) depicting the goddess Roma enthroned and adored by peoples of the world, letterpress title page in red and black with vignette, 29 copper-engraved full-page plates depicting medals and coins, folding table, ornamental borders, and decorative initials. Full contemporary speckled calf, spine richly gilt in five compartments between raised bands, red morocco lettering piece gilt, covers ruled with corner pieces in blind, edges speckled red, plain period end papers with engraved armorial book plate of E[dwarf]. W[iliac]. Steakhouse (Franks 27808), a second plate just barely visible beneath. Binding tight and square; contents remarkably crisp, clean and bright. A spectacular example of this scarce and important edition (WorldCat lists only four copies). Dibdin (Greek and Roman classics), p. 349. Bibliotheca Splendidissima Rendorpiana 496. Often identified as the second edition (reprinted from the Utrecht edition of 1680), though Dibdin says erroneously so, this being a reprint of the Elusive edition of 1674, with additional notes and Graveness' preface. We have not been able to confirm either claim with certainty, but our search of bibliographic records that have come to light since Disdain's judgment, in 1808, make his pronouncement seem unlikely. Es ist zu diskutieren, ob der Autor Florus mit dem Dichter Publius Annius Florus gleichzusetzen ist. Um 120 ist von ihm eine Geschichte Roms in zwei oder vier Bänden er…schienen, die etwa denselben historischen Zeitraum umfasst.-Einband mit Marmorpapier bezogen. Kleines montiertes Rückenschildchen. Auf dem vorderen Vorsatz findet sich Exlibris ("Dr. Harry von Pistohlkors"), auf dem fliegenden Vorsatz ein gleichlautender Namensstempel sowie auf dem Titelblatt der Stempel "Forbushof" (Gut Vorbuse?). Harry von Pistohlkors (1870-1947) war ein livländischer Landwirt, Publizist und Politiker. U.a. war er bis 1912 Herausgeber der Baltischen Wochenschrift für Landwirtschaft.-Einband mit nur mäßigen Gebrauchsspuren. Der vordere Vorsatz sowie die ersten Seiten sind etwas fleckig. He is credited with four works: a sh…ort, witty poem dedicated to the emperor Hadrian, who replied with a parody (both poems are quoted in the Historia Augusta); letters and poems; a dialogue on the question whether Virgil was an orator or a poet (only the preface remains); and the Epitome of the Histories of Titus Livy. Florus is best known for his version of the Roman History: strongly focused on warfare, it compares the history of the Roman empire to a life cycle: the reign of the kings is Rome's infancy, the conquest of Italy its youth, and as a Mediterranean power, Rome is grown-up.Although not always historically accurate when it comes to geographic and chronological details, it is still a truly useful text, as it gives us an impressions of the lost portions of Livy's History of Rome.
