He went to sea aboard the Coast Guard cutter Pontchartrain to observe the great hurricane of 1938. To get his stories firsthand, he lived in lighthouses, on lightships, with oil drillers, G men and Secret Service agents. He was a friend of J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. As a young man he rowed in an eight oar shell on the Harlem River and he joined' the New York National Guard's Seventh Regiment before World War I. He, was barred from war service because he had lost an eye in an athletic accident at the age of 14.After the war he headed his own public relations concern and photographic illustration service. In World War n, Mr. Floherty was chairman of Port Washington's mobilization and defense demonstration committee.
