First Flint edition, number 365 of 500 copies printed on handmade paper. There were also 12 copies printed on vellum. Green stated that "no one has caught the magic and the music and the wonder of the old Greek legends as Kingsley did" (p. 132). Kingsley's collection is complemented in this edition by Flint's illustrations. Gardner notes that reprints of this title in the 1920s included only 9 of Flint's original 12 colour plates. The 15 stories feature Perseus, Theseus, and the Argonauts. Accompanying this copy are two contemporary promotional bookmarks from the Riccardi Press and the Medici Society. Keith S. Gardner, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Unsigned Limited Edition Works of Sir William Russell Flint, 1994, p. 116; Roger Lancelyn Green, Tellers of Tales, 1946; Ransom, p. 395. Quarto. First Flint edition, deluxe issue, number 42 of 100 copies issued with the additional suite of four colour plates, retained here in the original folder. There were also 875 copies of the trade edition and 12 copies printed on vellum and signed by the artist. William Russell Flint contributed to a number of early 20th-century editions of the Apocrypha. He was described by Charles Wheeler, the president of the Royal Academy, as an artist of "a steady hand, keen eye, and gay spirit in a shaky world" (ODNB). The introduction to this edition was provided by M. R. James. Although best-known now for his ghost stories, James had an extensive and eminent career as a biblical scholar, with a particular specialism in the apocryphal tales. His The Apocryphal New Testament (1924), a scholarly collection of all the known "apocryphal gospels, acts, epistles, and apocalypses was standard until J. K. Elliott's collection of the same name appeared in 1993" (ODNB). Ransom, p. 314. Quarto. Colour frontispiece and 3 mounted colour plates, text printed within green frames. Original japon, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, yapp edges, original cream cotton ties, top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, largely unopened. With four additional plates in the original envelope, as issued. Front board slightly sprung, sporadic faint foxing; a near-fine copy.…
