Bound in original gilt-stamped decorated burgandy cloth. Page block head in gilt, others rough-cut. Former property of the Cripplegate Institute, bearing their stamp on many internal pages, but never on the text or illustrations. Additional perforated stamps to title page and final text page. Boards are rubbed along edges, chipped at spine ends and tanned at spine. Small hinge break at FEP, light penned notation to Part I facing page and faint thumb marks some internal pages. Foxing to endpapers and a couple of other pages. Extremely good condition considering age. AD. Used.

The Portfolio: Monographs on Artistic Subjects No. 10, October 1894. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seven colour plates, and thirty-one images in the text. Collated complete. An essay on bookbinding in France, with reference to early bindings, ornamental work, different materials, and many of the important figures in the development of this craft. Written by William Younger Fletcher, a distinguished English bibliophile and librarian, well-renowned for his extensive knowledge on books and book collecting during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. He was appointed assistant-keeper in the department of printed books in the British Museum. Edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton, an English artist, art critic and author who was a keen advocate of contemporary printmaking. Bound in modern cloth with the original card wraps bound in. Externally, excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and the odd small handling mark. Minor age toning to the extremities. Very Good Indeed. book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Date stated as 1894, though the boards and endpapers are possibly new. The boards are a touch edge worn, with the label on the spine a touch torn. Aside from this, the boards remain strong and sturdy, and the pages have gold gilt along their top edges. Internally, there are no markings or inscriptions, and the pages within are crisp, clean and complete with all colour plates and their tissue-guards present. The binding is secure. JK.
