The family is subjected to unsafe housing, exploitative labor practices, physical injuries, and family deaths, leading Jurgis to eventually embrace socialism as the only viable solution to the injustices of capitalism. The book's graphic descriptions of unsanitary meatpacking practices generated public outrage and led to real-world reforms like the Meat Inspection Act.
