Welcome to the bizarre world of Fletcher Hanks, the mysterious cartoonist who created a hailstorm of tales of brutal retribution from 1939-1941.and then mysteriously vanished. His obscure and hard to find stories are finally collected here. Welcome to the bizarre world of Fletcher Hanks, Super Wizard of the Inkwell. Fletcher Hanks worked for only a few years in the earliest days of the comic book industry (1939-1941). Because he worked in a gutter medium for second-rate publishers on third-rate characters, his work has been largely forgotten. But among aficionados he is legendary. At the time, comic books were in their infancy. The rules governing their form and content had not been established. In this Anything Goes era, Hanks' work stands out for its thrilling experimentation. At once both crude and visionary, cold and hot as hell, Hanks' work is hard to pigeon hole. One thing is for certain: the stuff is bent. Hanks drew in a variety of genres depicting science-fiction saviors, white women of the jungle, and he-man loggers. Whether he signed these various stories "Henry Fletcher" or "Hank Christy" or "Barclay Flagg" there is no mistaking the unique outsider style of Fletcher Hanks. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Fletcher Hanks was arguably the first great comic book auteur: He wrote, penciled, inked, and lettered all of his own stories -- an unprecedented solo act in the 1940s comic book industry. Between 1939 and 1941 he created nearly 50 comics stories, all unified by a uniquely artistic vision -- primitive, bizarre, and singularly idiosyncratic. Whether it's the superhero Stardust doling out ice cold slabs of poetic justice, or the jungle protectress Fantomah tearing evildoers from limb to ragged limb, contemporary readers will be stunned by the pop surrealism and unfiltered violent mayhem of Hanks' work. This new paperback edition brings back into print all of Hanks' previously published material and is the most complete collection of his work.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Oblong quarto measuring 11½" x 7". Screwbound brown leather album. Contains 46 silver gelatin photographs measuring between 3¼" x 4 ½" with printed captions. Lacking the front board with chips and rubbing thus good only album with near fine photographs. A photo album used as a yearbook and given to Alice Evelyn Evans, whose name is penned on the title page, when she graduated from Western Maryland College in 1909. The beginning of the album has printed lyrics to the class song and yell, a list of class officers, album staff, and students graduating that year, and the class poem. After these pages the graduating senior are represented with a full page per student which includes a portrait of the graduate, their "history" and a "prophecy" for what their future held. The final page shows a group photograph of the students and a professor. Alice was from Baltimore, Maryland and her page begins with the quote, "From the looks, not the lips is the soul reflected." Her "history" section tells of her homesickness, although not exceptionally far from home while at school, and that she was an only child. It also tells of a beau that she was "captivated" with for a "whole year" and the break up pain followed her until her senior year. The prophecy given to Alice spoke of her marrying a naval officer who she spends time traveling with. One of Alice's classmates, Fletcher Hanks, Sr., went on to become a comic book artist during the "Golden Age" of comic books in the late 1930 and early 1940s, including the creation of an early female superhero, Fantomah. Hanks' art has recently gained cult status after the publication of an omnibus of his work. An interesting commemorative yearbook photo album.…
