This very rare work was prepared in two parts, Perse ancienne and Perse moderne. The Perse ancienne deals with the details of Persian antiquities and The lithographed plates of Perse moderne are the finest depictions of Modern Persia in the nineteenth century.Antoine d'Orléans (Antoine Marie Philippe Louis d'Orléans, 1824 ? 1890, was the youngest son of King Louis Philippe of France.Flandin (1809-1889) was the renowned French orientalist, painter, and archaeologist. He is most distinguished for his famous drawings and paintings of Persian monuments, landscapes, and social life made during his travels with the architect Pascal Coste during the years 1839-41. Flandin?s observations on the state of Persia and international politics in the mid-19th century continue to provide important documentary information. In 1839, Flandin was, along with Coste, made laureate of the Institut de France; both joined the embassy of the Comte de Sercey to Persia. Flandin?s courage during this journey, spanning the entirety of Persia, was highly praised by Coste, who noted his own intrepidity during times of duress. Their timetable and work were strictly organized. Upon his return to France, Flandin was awarded the Légion d?honneur. Coste, Pascal-Xavier (1787; d. 1879), French architect, famous for his extensive travels and surveys (Egypt, North Africa, Persia, Europe, Russia). During two Egyptian missions (1817-22; 1823-27), in the service of Mo?ammad-?Al? Pasha, he completed various industrial projects. His keen interest in Arabic language and antique architecture drew the attention of the Institut de France. He was sent with Flandin to accompany de Sercey?s embassy to the court of Mo?ammad Shah in Persia. Although the account of their Persian travel was written by Flandin, Coste provides very precise observations in his Notes, notably about their hardships, their shortage of money, the persons they met en route, etc. Soon after their return (February 1842), they divided their respective tasks to publish their drawings. Coste took responsibility for the architectural renderings and monumental plans; Flandin the representation of architectural details, picturesque views, etc. , Size : Large folio (427x613mm). , Volume 1: Illustrated with 104 full page lithographed plates of the architecture of Persian antiquities, (4 folding).
