Colour and monochrome paintings throughout. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, not price clipped, book never opened or thumbed. He is most famous for his portraits of Charles I of England and his family and court, painted with a relaxed elegance that was to be the dominant influence on English portrait-painting for the next 150 years. Sceptical about the religious claims of both sides (Catholic and Huguenot), Davila vividly portrayed the French wars of religion mainly as a struggle between noble factions for the control of the royal government and, within limits, is still a rich source of information for a troubled period of French history. SIGNED by Claudio Agretti with neat hand writing in Latin to the fore edge margin title page ' Claudio Agretti - Caucete ad Hominid' (be cautious of men | beware of men) from the New Testament - Matthew Chapter 10 - Verse 17. Afterthought: Claudio Agretti's cautionary counsel - feel it is even more his warning, than his signature that sets the book apart. Few words, but so relevant for that episode of manipulation, betrayal, counter-betrayal with murderous effects around each corner. Little has changed, maybe a bit adjusted, more cunning, could see it used as sober reminder for junior clergy by cardinals - even by the Vatican, coming from man of his stature, brought out of obscurity for 'the here and now'. Interesting marker for UK-Irish religious history library or record of papal support in an Irish Catholic Church Library as it directly connects with period of bloodshed | suppression by Puritan Protestants | Roundheads - revenge massacres, mass confiscations, famine, plague - many sent to America as 'slaves'.
