Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First edition. Small quarto. Quarter cloth and papercovered boards with printed label. Modest stains on the spine, some light tidemarks on the front board and on the edge of the first couple of leaves, else a sound good or better copy lacking the dust jacket, but with all plates and maps present. Inscribed by Robert J. Flaherty to the film director, screenwriter, and producer Paul Bern: "To Paul Bern with the good wishes of the author, Robert Flaherty. New York City. Jan. 4th, 1927." Bern was Irving Thalberg's personal assistant and considered one of the great talents in Hollywood, but his fate was unfortunate, related by Kenneth Anger in his scandalous book *Hollywood Babylon*. Bern died by his own hand just two months after marrying the Hollywood bombshell Jean Harlow. Anger attributed Bern's suicide to his impotence, but others surmised he was murdered by an abandoned common-in-law wife, with the studio covering up the scandal to protect their biggest star. This book documents several of Flaherty's trips to the Hudson Bay area, which were the basis for the ultra-influential 1922 film *Nanook of The North*, generally regarded as the first feature-length documentary. Bern had an extensive library; many of his books fell into the possession of his friend and fellow MGM producer Carey Wilson, from whose estate this came. A terrific association connecting two important early Hollywood figures.

With a mimeo label snipe affixed to the verso, along with the stamps of National Film Archive library. From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler. A breakthrough role for Sabu, who would go on to work under exclusive contract for film mogul Alexander Korda in "The Thief of Bagdad" (1940), "Arabian Nights" (1942), and "The Jungle Book" (1942). Set in colonial India, shot on location in Gwynedd, Wales. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus overall.

Unbound. Zustand: Very Good. A photographic print depicting a scene from the 1926 film *Moana* directed by husband and wife team Robert J. Flaherty and Francis Hubbard Flaherty. Measuring approximately 12" x 15". Remnants of glue and paper along the margins from being removed from an old mat, toning to the center (where the mat did not cover), scattered light staining, and more remnants of paper and glue on the unprinted verso, still very good as the image remains bold and clear and the flaws could easily be covered with a new mat. Unlike in the film, this is a full-body image of The Conch Blower, who can be seen at around the 1:14:30 mark (in the 2014 digital restoration), the image cropped framing the man from his shoulders up as he blows the conch. The intertitles preceding this scene read, "Everything that you have seen -- the gathering of food, of game, the making of the feast, the Siva -- has all been preparation.preparation for a great event. There is an ordeal through which every Polynesian must pass to win the right to call himself a man. The conch shell sounds the call." Though the 2016 Disney film *Moana* shares a title and geographic setting with the 1926 film, that's where the similarities end. Kenneth W. Leish, in his book *Cinema* explains that, "Refusing to work from a prepared script, Flaherty spent more than three years filming *Moana*, which beautifully depicted the Samoans' day-to-day life," going on to explain the films lukewarm reception being partly due to poor advertising by Paramount who tried to sell it as "'the love story of a South Seas siren,'" which does not properly describe the film. Similar to Robert J. Flaherty's most famous film, *Nanook of the North*, much of what's depicted in *Moana* was staged, which is why it is considered a docufiction film, as opposed to a documentary. While similar photographic prints depicting scenes from *Nanook of the North* appear somewhat common, we have been unable to locate any such prints from *Monana*.

Vintage photograph of F.W. Murnau, cinematographer Floyd Crosby, a sound engineer, and extras on location during shooting of the 1931 film. Considered the first example of "docufiction." The fourth and final film made by Murnau during his time in the US. Murnau and Robert J. Flaherty wrote the unpublished story "Turia," based on a South Sea legend Flaherty had heard while working on W.S. Van Dyke's "White Shadows in the South Seas" (1928), which would later evolve into "Tabu." Two young lovers on the idyllic island of Bora Bora find themselves in danger when an old warrior declares the girl to be the Chosen Maid. Refusing, the lovers run off to a "westernized" island were the boy earns a living as a pearl diver and lands in debt. When the old warrior discovers their location, they plan another escape, requiring the boy paying off his debts by pearl diving in shark-infested waters. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Shot on location in Tahiti and the Leeward Islands (French Polynesia). 5.75 x 3.5 inches. Near Fine, lightly faded. National Film Registry. Rosenbaum 1000. Godard, Histoire(s) du Cinema. Eureka! 61.

6 "copperplate engravings" (photogravures) being reproductions of photos of the inhabitants of the sub-arctic part of Eastern Canada. Images approx. 22x16 cm. on sheets 50x33 cm. (3 printed with blue ink, 3 printed with black ink) with captions on attached slips. Loose in portfolio with tissue guards interleaved and printed introductory leaf, housed in original grey board folding box. Ends of spine of box a trifle worn, generally excellent condition. Robert Flaherty (1884-1951) was an American explorer and film maker who explored sub-arctic Canada from 1910 to 1916 and made the first commercially successful feature-length documentary film Nanook of the North in 1922. Revillon Freres was a French fur and luxury goods company, founded in Paris in 1723. Then called la Maison Givelet, it was purchased by Louis-Victor Revillon in 1839 and soon, as Revillon Frères, became the largest fur company in France. Branches were opened in London in 1869 and in New York in 1878. At the end of the 19th century, Revillon had stores in Paris, London, New York, and Montreal. According to the introduction: "These photographs, chosen from a collection of eighteen, were made during a series of five expeditions covering a period of eleven years. They were taken on behalf of our company [Revillon Frères] by Robert J. Flaherty." The label attached to this introductory sheet states "The remaining twelve photographs are for sale by G.P. Putnam's Sons.New York". We have ascertained that there were in fact 3 different sets, each issued separately, of these photogravures, six to each. In 2013 PBA Galleries sold 2 sets, each with different image. There is no immediate record of the number of copies printed, but we suggest a very small edition as they seem to be quite scarce. The subjects represented here are: - The Huskie (The Wolf Dog of the Eskimos) [blue] - Summer (August), Eskimo Kayak in Northeastern Hudson Bay [blue] - The Hunter, Eskimo in the rough ice-fields at sea [blue] - Nyla and child, Eteeveemuit Eskimo of Cape Dufferin, Northwest Ungava - Allegoo (Shining Water) Sikoslingmuit Eskimo Woman, Southern Baffin Land - Tooktoo (The Deer) Chief of Sikoslingmuit Eskimos, Southern Baffin Land.
