First edition of this technical guide to the ensign, rank flags, and other naval colours of Chiang Kai-Shek's government. Each illustration is faced by a diagram detailing the design's precise ratios and colours. WorldCat records only the University of Chicago's copy of a later edition published in 1939. Besides the flags of the Kuomintang and the Republic of China, the present work covers those of the president, senior executive officials, flag ranks, and specialized ships such as customs, water police, and salt administration vessels. Folio (381 x 282 mm), ff. [ii, 18]. With 18 large colour illustrations of flags, each faced by an explanatory diagram. Contemporary brown cloth-backed marbled boards, original card wrappers bound in. Ad 1: Very interesting collection of drawings of 131 flags, code and signal flags, banners, standards, crests, etc., made in late 19th-century Japan, most of them coloured in red, blue, white, black, yellow, and some decorated with gold and/or silver paint. Many with mottos and captions in Japanese characters. The collection can be divided into 8 subcategories. (1) 34 flags on black poles of European and other powers. (2) 17 rectangular (Samurai?) banners on a pole with a horizontal pole at the top, mostly in red and white. (3) 28 pennants and banners of various shapes, mostly on crested poles and some of them decorated or partly decorated with gold and/or silver paint. (4) 27 Japanese military (Samurai?) flags and banners in red and white, some with Japanese characters, including the flag of the imperial Japanese army: the red sun with the red sunrays. (5) 11 Japanese military flags and banners in blue, black and white. (6) 4 unfinished and uncoloured sketches of Japanese military flags and banners. (7) 3 symbolic banners with mottos in Japanese characters. (8) 7 unfinished, but partly coloured in sketches of flags, banners and pennants.Ad 2: 10 folded leaves of Japanese so-called rice-paper, mostly containing decorative flower designs, one with fans and another with traditional Japanese dolls. This is a 1950s Pierre Vittier pictorial map of the Three Flags Highway, also known as U.S. Highway 395. A Wonderful Pictorial Map Known as the Three Flags Highway because it connected Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the map highlights the highway from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to Hamilton Ranch, Mexico, and depicts as far east as Wyoming and Montana. Wonderful pictorial vignettes appear along the highway's route. People are illustrated horse racing, fishing, skiing, hunting, and fishing, alongside natural landmarks such as Sequoia National Park, Mt. Whitney, Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, and Banff National Park in Alberta. An illustration of the Grand Coulee Dam is included in Washington State. A Short History of the Three Flags Highway The Three Flags Highway, also known as U.S. Route 395, is a highway in the western United States with a cult following much like the celebrated U.S. Route 66. At its longest, the highway stretched 1,490 miles from San Diego Bay to the Canadian border and effortlessly connected with highways in both Canada and Mexico. Today, U.S. 395 has been significantly shortened in favor of Interstate 15, but remains an important north-south route along the Sierra Nevada Mountains and in eastern Oregon and Washington, where distances to other highways can reach into the hundreds of miles. Though not as well-known as Route 66, efforts are currently underway to reinvigorate the highway in order to preserve the historic landmarks and Americana that exist along its route. A Closer Look Cities and towns all along the highway are labeled, including Tijuana, Mexico, San Diego and San Bernardino, California, Carson City and Reno, Nevada, Walla Walla, Washington, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Jasper, Alberta. As this is a highway map, U.S. 395 is not the only highway illustrated. Highways snake their way across the western United States, all of which are labeled. Cities and towns throughout the region are also indicated, along with rivers, lakes, and other national parks. A mileage chart is situated along the right border, providing the viewer with distances between cities and towns from Jasper, Canada to Hamilton Ranch, Mexico in both directions. An impressive large-format double-sided 1907 wall map of the world by the London branch of the Scarborough Company. It provides a wealth of information on infrastructure, transportation, economic development, and the relative military might of different countries. A Closer Look The map is on a single sheet which has been printed on both sides: one detailing the Western Hemisphere, including the Americas, and the other detailing the Eastern Hemisphere, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Particular attention has been paid to the global railroad, telegraph, and steamship networks. At the same time, caravan routes across Central Asia and ancient ruins are also marked. Information ranging from the locations of British and American Consulates, city indexes, and population statistics to ocean currents and the regular extent of ice pack in the Arctic is recorded, including in many tables and graphs surrounding the map. In the margins, flags of various countries are presented on the Western Hemisphere sheet, as are portraits of the rulers of countries on the Eastern Hemisphere sheet. Publication History and Census This map was first issued in 1906 by the Scarborough Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. It was reissued in 1907 - the present example - for the London branch of the firm, based at 5 Arundel Street, Strand. Already a scarce map, this example is especially so due to the inclusion of the flags and portraits of rulers. We note only two examples of this presentation in institutional collections - at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Pennsylvania State University - and it has only appeared on the market once in recent years. This is a c. 1962 Prem Educational Stores New Delhi issued vexillology chart of the flags and 'war plane signs' of the world. This chart is notable for including a number of unique and ephemeral flags, including the United Arab Republic, Somaliland, and the State of Vietnam. Some of the choices reflect political alignments critical of colonial authority. A Closer Look The flags of 103 nations are illustrated, along with the insignia used by 52 nations to identify their aircraft. Divided by continent, rough groupings of flags include Asia, North America, Central America, South America, and Europe. Australia's flag and insignia are included in their own section. Qatar and Oman are curiously included with Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. North Vietnam is included with Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. Political Statements through Vexillology Several ephemeral flags are also illustrated here, such as the flag of the U. A. R. (United Arab Republic), which is also inexplicably grouped with the South American flags. The U.A.R. existed from 1958 until 1971 in two different forms. The first U. A. R. (1958 - 1961) was a political union between Egypt and Syria. Syria seceded from the union in 1961 after a coup d'état, but Egypt continued to be known officially as the 'United Arab Republic' until 1971. Another ephemeral flag is the flag of the State of Vietnam. This flag is presented as the flag of Vietnam but represents more properly the State of Vietnam, which, from 1949 to 1955, during the First French-Indochina War (1946 - 1954), claimed authority over all of Vietnam. The Malayan flag representing the Federation of Malaya was used between 1948 and 1963 when Malaysia was formed. Other intriguing flags include the flag of Tibet and flags representing both Communist China and the Republic of China. This 1720 Chatelain flag chart illustrates the world's flags during The War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714) and the Great Northern War (1700 - 1720). A Closer Look The image displays 88 beautifully engraved and colored flags, primarily of European nations. In several cases, more than one flag is illustrated. For example, the French flags include the Royal Flag, the Admiral's flag, the flag of the Merchant Marine, and the flag of the Estates General. Four Ottoman flags appear, not counting the specific flags of Algeria and Tripoli. England is represented by six flags, not counting two for Scotland and one further for Ireland. This chart features several other rarely seen flags: in the lower row, the Dragon Ensign of China stands out. It appears as a great whirlpool surrounded by eight decorations. This is most likely based upon an image of the Chinese flag appearing in Carel Allard's 1705 Dutch flag book Niewe Hollandse Scheepsbouw . In fact, it is a misinterpretation of the Qing flag, a dragon on a yellow field with eight banners. Other flags of interest include Pope's banner, a curious Portuguese flag bearing a priest, the flags of various trading companies, the Flag of the Tartars (dragon), and the arm and saber banner of Poland. Courland (Kurzeme, the western part of Latvia) sports both a national banner and a naval flag featuring a black crab on a field of red. In addition to the actual flags depicted on the sheet, Chatelain provides a primer for understanding a flag's heraldic terminology in general and supplies the reader with an alphabetical table to aid in the location of specific flags on the sheet. Publication History and Census This sheet was printed in the last of the seven volumes of Chatelain's Atlas Historique , a monumental work published over the course of some 15 years - the first volume was completed in 1705, the seventh in 1720. This is a rare 1820 Luigi Rossi chart of maritime flags of various major European, Mediterranean, and World powers, including Great Britain, France, Russia, the Ottoman Empire, and the United States of America. A Closer Look The chart includes over one hundred maritime flags of various nations and kingdoms. Major European powers such as Great Britain, Russia, France, Austria, and Prussia are featured prominently, but the chart also includes the flags of Mediterranean states such as Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, as well as Asian powers such as China, Japan, and Persia. As the Italian States were not unified at this point, the individual states of Piedmont, Naples, the Papal States, and so on collectively constitute a significant portion of the chart. The Post-Napoleonic Order This chart is a product of an era of uncertainty, when the international order following the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna remained uncertain. The 'Concert of Europe' that emerged was premised on maintaining stability in both domestic and international relations. In reality, while many nationalist and liberal movements were temporarily suppressed, they were at the forefront of European affairs for many decades. In the case of Italy, the fifty-year long process of unification known as the Risorgimento started to gain steam around the time this chart was produced, with failed revolutions in both southern and northern Italy in 1820 - 1821. One benefit of the relative stability of the 19th century was increased trade, facilitated by treaties as well as the reforms undertaken during Napoleon's rule. Improvements in naval technology, the increasing naval dominance of the British Empire, the emergence of its former colony in the United States as a naval power, and early manifestations of the philosophy of free trade (as opposed to mercantilism) all aided the increase of maritime trade over this period. Publication History and Census This chart was part of Rossi's Nuovo Atlante di Geografia universale, compilazione ridotta ad uso degl'Italiani, riveduta ed ampliata , published by Batelli e Fanfani in Milan in 1820. Ozaki (?????) map of Yokohama, Japan, then Japan's primary international port. The map orients Yokohama to the northeast, with the city's shoreline at top. At the time, Yokohama was Japan's most international and industrialized city, with foreign settlements extending form the Bluff to Yokohama Chinatown. The cartographer stresses the internationality of the settlement, with a chart of flags at left center representing the largest foreign contingents in Yokohama. The vexillology chart features the flags of 18 countries, among them the United States, Persia, Rome (the Pope), and China. Despite clearly being uncomfortable with Latin characters, Ozaki has added English text here and there. He seems to have placed the capital 'D' shape backwards several times in the imprint below the flag chart. Publication History and Census This map was issued in Yokohama by Tomigoro? Ozaki. Very good. Repaired partial centerfold split. Size 21 x 27.5 Inches. A vexillogical chromolithograph delight, this is an extremely rare separate issue c. 1862 flags of world nations chart. Flags are broken up by region, with French flags at top, followed by England and other European powers, followed by African, Asian, and American flags. Among the more interesting flags are the Russian Postal Ensign, the white elephant flag of Siam (Thailand), the Cockerel flag of Pegu (Burma), and the Dragon flag of China. A large wind rose appears at top center. The U.S. Flags The flag of the United States is the 34-star flag, inaugurated with the admission of Kansas as a state, in 1861. By 1863, with the admission of West Virginia, it was replaced with a 35-star Flag. It also shows an uncommon flag with vertical strips and an eagle - this is probably the U.S. Customs Ensign. Chromolithography Chromolithography is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black basecoat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired effect. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic effects. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it emerged as the dominate method of color printing. Publication History and Census This chart was issued in 1862 by Maison Basset. It was engraved and lithographed J. Kuppenheim Lithographie and Lithographie Boucher. While the chart is undated, we were able to date it based upon the U.S. American Civil War flags depicted. This chart is exceedingly rare with this being the only known example. …
