The impetus for the formation of this working group was provided by Professor Abraham J. Malherbe of Yale Divinity School, who suggested it at the 1988 SBL Annual Meeting in Chicago. He wished to see the Society form a collaborative group that would give close attention to ancient texts, both pagan and Christian, treating them in their own right as well as in relation to each other. He envisioned an interdisciplinary group of scholars, diverse in their training and methodological presuppositions, but united in their devotion to the careful study of ancient documents. Such a group would include not only NT scholars, but also classicists, students of ancient philosophy, ancient historians, cultural and historical anthropologists, and others who were interested in Christian origins. In response to his suggestion, about two dozen scholars held an organizational and planning session at the 1989 SBL Annual Meeting in Anaheim. A proposal for the formation of a program unit devoted to the study of hellenistic moral philosophy and early Christianity was submitted soon thereafter to the Society, which promptly approved it.
