Der Band nähert sich dem aus BRD-Perspektive zunächst irritierendem Westernkult in der einstigen DDR - o.k., immerhin kam Karl May aus Hohenstein-Ernstthal in Sachsen. Noch 1989/ 90 entstehen neue Indianergruppen in Ostdeutschland.So waren bereits unter Führung einer Delegation von Angela Davis zu den X. Weltfestspielen der Jugend in Ostberlin 1973 unter dem Motto "Für antiimperialistische Solidarität, Frieden und Freundschaft" auch native americans dabei, die an der Besetzung von Wounded Knee beteiligt waren. Auch der Caoba-Zyklus von B. Traven über die Rebellion indianischer Arbeiter in Mexiko erlebte hier hohe Auflagen. Dabei entstand eine DDR-spezifische Indianerkultur, "die sich von der traditionellen, romantischen Westernbegeisterung unterscheidet. Ein neue Generation der Indianisten ist in der DDR geboren und aufgewachsen, die Deutsche Demokratische Republik ist ihre Heimat. Und so schlägt sich die Wissenschaftsgläubigkeit des Sozialismus auch in den Indianerklubs nieder. Die Indianisten werden regelrechte Hobbyethnologen, eignen sich umfassendes Wissen über die Kultur und Geschichte der nordamerikanischen Ureinwohner an und begeben sich auf die Suche nach Authentizität " (S.42). Die Suche nach einer gerechten sozialen Ordnung ohne Ausbeutung, Unterdrückung und Klassengegensätze - gemäß der realsozialistischen Ideologie - wurde auf den indianischen Kampf gegen imperialistische Unterdrückung und Fremdbestimmung übertragen. Die Forderung nach der Freiheit für Leonard Peltier, Aktivist des American Indian Movement (AIM) in den USA, war da eine naheliegende Forderung. Doch begriffen einige der ostdeutschen Irokesen, Dakota und Apachen ihre Aktivitäten zum Teil auch als solidarisch-egalitären "Urkommunismus", im Gegensatz zur DDR-Realität, als ökologisch-anarchistische Parallelwelt jenseits von Chef und Staat, als passiven Widerstand, als Flucht aus der staatlich-normierten Enge - was natürlich auch die Staatssicherheit auf den Plan rief.
