Inscribed on the front cover: "Mr. Saml Adams / from his [friend] / M. Nomed." (OCLC 2156839). Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864) was an American geologist, minister, and educator. In 1830, he became the first State Geologist of Massachusetts. He taught chemistry and natural history at Amherst College before serving as its president from 1845 to 1854. "Astraea" is a poem that reflects on the changing times and Oliver Wendell Holmes' nostalgia for the past. He uses the figure of Astraea, a Greek goddess of justice, to symbolize a bygone era of innocence and purity. The poem explores themes of loss and the contrast between the idealized past and the complex realities of the present.
