Hand painted embossed foil, 21.7 x 21.7cm, very good condition. A beautiful and unusual example of Chinese folk art, this is a vintage original hand painted embossed gold foil label, produced in China circa 1900 to be used as a decorative label on the outside of a box of firecrackers or fireworks. This label had been stored away and so is in virtually "as new" condition, however because of the fragile nature of the material, there is some flaking of the paint in small areas. This isn't anything you really notice because of the vivid colours and pattern. In an article in the January - February 1981 issue of Arts of Asia magazine, John H. Enns notes that this style of Chinese firework label was produced between 1850 and 1910 in the Canton region of Kwangtung province. "Many were painted in the city of Fatshan long noted for the manufacture of religious prints, papercuts and charms used in holiday celebrations. During these celebrations it was common to hang boxes of fireworks across the narrow streets and explode the entire string from a single fuse. As a result, very few of these labels remain today." As with the fruit crate labels produced in the United States, the purpose of the firework labels was to attract the eye and therefore sell the merchandise; so bright colours and auspicious symbols were used, to convey a feeling of festiveness and good fortune. Each label was painted by hand. The labels were often imported into the United States by firework wholesalers to use in packaging the fireworks; these labels were in storage in a Portland, Oregon Chinese goods store.

Ephemera. Zustand: Very good condition. Attractive Chinese firework labels with the manufacturers name, 'Fat Shan Lai Wo Cheong' printed with a red rubber stamp on the verso of most. According to the description of a group of labels held by the MOA at the University of British Columbia, they were made in Guangzhou, Guandong and Canton, China between 1850 and 1910. 17 elaborate foil and tissue or paper backed labels with colorful hand painted illustrations of men, women and children, flowers, butterflies ranging in shapes and sizes 3x1.5" to 7.5x7.5" to 10.5 x 5". Detailed scenes of people dressed in robes, with curtains and flowers surrounding them, and interesting facial expressions. "Gold labels were handmade in workshops using assembly line techniques. Artisans first cut out the labels' overall shape from bronze or copper foil. Next, they apply a thin rice paper backing to strengthen the foil. To texturize the foil, the artisans used pointed tools to emboss designs. These sheets were pinned to a wall or table so that several painters could work on them. The backgrounds would be painted first, followed by the details in the foreground using smaller brushes. During the last application, even finer brushes were used for the facial features and calligraphy. Some shiny areas of the original bronze or copper foil were left exposed. It was also common to add a layer of gold leaf designs, pressed out of hand-carved wooden blocks, to further accentuate the design. Firecrackers were and are used to ward off evil spirits, honor deities and to celebrate special occasions. Manufacturers and merchants would order bulk firecrackers, pack them into wooden crates, and decorate the crates with these labels to entice potential distributors and consumers." In den WarenkorbLarge etching with a spectacular night view of a fireworks display during the Nuremberg peace festival. This event took place in Nuremberg in July 1650, to celebrate the end of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), one of the most devastating conflicts in European history. The festival was intended as a sign of hope for a better future in Europe, and particularly Germany. The present etching may have been printed to spread this message of peace. The Thirty Years' War started as a civil war within the Holy Roman Empire, but eventually became a wider European affair. Primarily fought in present day Germany, however, it brought disease and starvation to the region, and depopulated large areas. After five years of negotiation, a peace treaty was finally signed in October 1648. Any remaining unresolved issues were negotiated during a major diplomatic congress held in Nuremberg between May 1649 and July 1650. When the negotiations were concluded, a peace festival was held, which included a large fireworks show. The present etching shows this spectacular display, with the numerous skyrockets shot from all sides of the castle. Remarkable details are the burning statue in the middle, and the men with flaming swords surrounding it.The image was engraved after designs by German artists Peter Troschel (ca. 1620-after 1667) and Michael Herr (1591-1661). In was first printed in 1650, and included a title at the top and a legend at the bottom. The present version most likely dates from the middle of the 18th century, but has been significantly enlarged, especially lengthwise. These new proportions make the image even more spectacular. The work has been folded in the past, the lower part of the left margin has been restored, insect droppings in a small area on the left side of the head margin, not affecting the etched image. Otherwise in good condition. Kept in a white passe-partout. One large etching.

If I succeed in interesting, and in some degree enlightening, my readers, I shall feel I have not written in vain; if I fail, I shall know it is not in my choice of subject but in my capacity for dealing with it. In den WarenkorbA rare (unique?) broadside announcing a fireworks display at the river Elbe (Dresden), organized by Franz Kölbel, a famed pyrotechnician from Graz (Austria). The show was held on 5 September 1829, and reviewed in the Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode. The paper praised the spectacular rockets, "deren ausgeworfenen Sterne so lange fortschimmerten und so hoch in den Lüften hin schwebten, dass sie sich unter die wirklichen Sterne zu verlieren schienen". Franz Köbel also sold fireworks at his shop in Graz. Some soiling and staining, edges frayed, damaged at 2 folds (small repairs). Overall in good condition.l Cf. Venetia, Pietro Dusinelli, 1586. Folio. Nice later (around 1950) half polished calf, raised bands, 4 compartments gilt. Titlepage with a beautifull renaissance caryatid border in woodcut and with the coat of arms of the Duke of Aragon. Title with 2 small stamps. (4),92 leaves + 2 unnumbered leaves (at sign. T) with illustrations. Having 6 full-page and 29 smaller woodcut-iullustr. and 2 unnumb. plates. Clean and fine, with the illustrations in strong impressions. The opening initial in the preface has been cut out, with a bit of loss of a few letters on verso. The very rare first edition, the only edition in the original form, of Collado's famous work, being "the first really detailed, well-illustrated technical manual on both the theory and practice of artillery" (A.R. Hall in Ballistics in the 17th century)."The greatest interest of this work as far as pyrotechnics are concerned is contained in Chapter 11 which is entitled, "Of.fires which can be adopted for use in times of festivity. The text of the 1586 edition describes these items (a line rocket, a vertical and horizontal wheel, and a device called Spanish 'Las Granadas'), but they are not illustrated. This book contains some of the earliest and fullest descriptions of recreative fireworks." (Chris Philip, C 070.4)."Very rare, and one of the earliest works, if not the earliest, dealing exclusively with artillery. The numerous types of cannon figured are of great interest, while the work itself represents a fine specimen of typography." (Sotheran, Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematica, vol. I, no 6987.Cockle (No 664) calls it "Very rare" the only ed. of the original form of Collado's famous work, Ayala, nor having seen it, gives the trans. of the Spanish "Platica" as a reprint of it."(Cockle). Engraved title with Neptun & Mars. (6),277,(10) pp., 28 half-page textengravings and 15 large wood-cut illustrations. A few scattered brownspots. A good copy. Second enlaged edition of this scarce treatise of fireworks for war and recreation. The work is divided in five sections: the first 56 pp. to war, pp. 57-146 to 'recreation' and pp. 147-277 to sundials, fortification, geometry and arithmetics. Of the English edition of 1629, Cockle says "This work, though in advance of anything so far written on the subject in English, does not attain to the standard of Thibourel and Appier. Yet it is with foreign treatises it must be weighed, for Malthus received his training in pyrotechnics abroad. It was Malthus who about the year 1634 introduced the mortar into the French service." - Klaus Jordan: 2328 (ed. 1629) - Chris Philip: M 040.3 - Cockle Nos 118 a. 939.
