Part Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Francisco De Orozco Y Portia ( 1605 - 1668 ) Was A Spanish General And Politician , Ii Marquis Of Mortara, Olias And San Reale. He Was The Son Of Rodrigo, I Marquis Of Mortara, Olias And San Reale, A Valiant Military Captain Under Philip Iv Of Spain And Rewarded By Many Fiefdoms. His Mother Was The Noblewoman Victoria Porcia. He First Fought Against The French In Italy In 1639 And Then In Roussillon Where The Spanish Army Was Defeated By That Of France In 1642 . In 1644 He Took Part In The Campaign Of Repression Of The Revolts In Catalonia Winning In Lerida And Tortosa In 1650 And Therefore Being Named In That Year Viceroy Of Catalonia, And Then Taking Part In The Siege And The Taking Of Barcelona In 1652 . Appointed Viceroy Of Catalonia From 1656 To 1659 , He Defeated The French Army At Camprodón ( 1658 ) And Ter ( 1659 ). At This Point In 1659 He Was Appointed A Member Of The Spanish Council Of State And From 10 September 1668 He Was Appointed Chamber Gentleman Of Philip Iv Of Spain And Governor Of The Duchy Of Milan.

He Was The Second Son Of Luis Ponce De León, Marquis Of Zara, And His Wife Victoria De Toledo, Daughter Of Viceroy Pedro De Toledo, Marquis Of Villafranca. On The Paternal Side He Was Nephew Of The Iii Duke Of Arcos, Rodrigo Ponce De Leon (1545-1630). He Began His Military Career In Valtellina As A Captain In 1625 And During The Reconquest Of Genoa After The French Attacks. On September 20, 1629 He Obtained A License To Be Able To Set Up His Own Infantry Regiment In The Kingdoms Of Andalusia And Murcia . After Attending Special Courses That Completed His Military Training,In 1630 He Set Off For Lombardy Where He Took Part In The Second Siege Of Casale Monferrato . The Following Year He Moved To Flanders For The "Camino Español" And Was Placed Under The Orders Of The Marquis Of Santa Cruz, Joined By The Italian Condottiers Andrea Cantelmo And Giambattista Panigarola . He Took Part In The Clashes In Bruges , In The Palatinate , In Maastricht And Then Returned To Spain On 23 November 1632 . In 1635 He Was Again In Italy Following The Marquis Of Leganés Who In May 1637 Designated Him As Successor Of Juan De Garay To Send His Troops To Lombardy Where He Had The Opportunity To Take Part In The Second Siege Of Casale Monferrato . The Following Year He Moved To Flanders For The "Camino Español" And Was Placed Under The Orders Of The Marquis Of Santa Cruz, Joined By The Italian Condottiers Andrea Cantelmo And Giambattista Panigarola . In This Context He Took Part In The Clashes In Bruges , In The Palatinate , In Maastricht And Then Returned To Spain On 23 November 1632 . In 1635 He Was Again In Italy Following The Marquis Of Leganés Who In May 1637 Designated Him As Successor Of Juan De Garay To Send His Troops To Lombardy In Support Of The War Operations Of Those Years. In Spite Of This The Ancient Privileges Evoked By Juan De Garay , Soon Forced The Governor To Remove Guzman Ponce De Leon Y Toledo Who Was Sent To Alsace As A General Of Cavalry Under The Command Of The Duke Of Lorraine , Where He Was Involved In The Luxembourg Campaign And In Siege Of Arras . In 1642 He Returned To Spain Where He Was Appointed General Commissioner Of The Spanish Cavalry And Served In Catalonia Until May 1646 When He Was Appointed Viceroy Of Navarre To The Death Of Andrea Cantelmo . In 1648 , At The Death Of Diego De Haro, Marquis Of The Carpio, King Philip Iv Of Spain Named Him Captain Of The Company Of His "Spanish Guard", A Job That Obviously Earned Him The Title Of Gentleman Of The Sovereign's Chamber As Well As Becoming A Member Of The State Council For The War. In 1662 He Was Finally Assigned To Occupy The Position Of Governor Of The Duchy Of Milan.
