Arch. Neurol. Psychiat., 46. - Chicago, American Medical Association, August 1941, gr.8°, 27 pp., 14 Fig., orig. wrappers. Rare Offprint! Reprinted with additions, from the Archives of Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. "The specific form of aseptic meningitis to be presented here occasionally follows operations on the central nervous system. The condition has received little attention in surgical literature, although its syndrome must have been an occasional cause for concern to all neurosurgeons of experience. When the nature and characteristics of this inflammatory process are recognized it can be readily distinguished from bacterial meningitis. In the syndrome of acute postoperative aseptic leptomeningitis there are recurring bouts of fever, rigidity of the neck and pleocytosis. Each reaction is of sudden, dramatic onset, but of short duration, and is preceded and followed by intervals relatively free from symptoms. The condition is troublesome rather than dangerous, for it prolongs the convalescent period by two to six weeks, without leaving serious residual complications. It occurs most often after operations in the posterior fossa which open the cisterna magna or after supratentorial operations which have left the ventricles wide open. Prevention can depend on an understanding of its mechanism." Finlayson & Penfield Alister I. Finlayson (1914-1991), neurosurgeon, "was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 3, 1914. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in Omaha and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1937. After graduation, he interned at McGill University in Montreal and the Mayo Clinic. During World War II, Dr. Finlayson served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps in the Southwest Pacific theatre. After World War II, Dr. Finlayson returned to Omaha. In 1945 he joined the University of Nebraska College of Medicine faculty as an instructor in the Neuro-Surgery Department. He was promoted in 1948 to Associate Instructor; in 1949 to Assistant Professor; in 1952 to Associate Professor; and in 1956 to Professor. He was a staff member at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital and a consulting staff member at the Children's Memorial Hospital, Immanuel Hospital, Bishop Clarkson Hospital, and Lutheran Hospital. He was a member of the Nebraska Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Neurology Society of America, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Rocky Mountain Neurosurgical Society, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Harvey Cushing Society, and Sigma Xi. Dr. Finlayson died at the age of 77 on February 22, 1991." "Wilder Graves Penfield (1891-1976) was an American-Canadian neurosurgeon. He expanded brain surgery's methods and techniques, including mapping the functions of various regions of the brain such as the cortical homunculus. His scientific contributions on neural stimulation expand across a variety of topics including hallucinations, illusions, dissociation and déjà vu. Penfield devoted much of his thinking to mental processes, including contemplation of whether there was any scientific basis for the existence of the human soul." The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital).
