Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - When Colonel Marcus Fielding returned home from his tour of duty in Baghdad, a taxi driver asked him what it was like being a soldier there. Marcus, an experienced veteran, found himself speechless - how could he properly explain to a civilian the nature of his work and his life during his tour He mouthed a few platitudes but felt frustrated: he had not done justice to his experience or to his fellow soldiers still in Iraq. This book is the result of that frustration, and it provides fascinating insights into the conditions on the ground in a theatre of war that more than 20,000 Australian men and women have served. Marcus was deployed as an 'embed' in the final days of the Australian presence. By this time, the violence had subsided somewhat from the carnage of the first few years of Operation Iraqi Freedom, but with several crucial elections being held, sectarian terror nonetheless reared its frightening head on many occasions. From his 'office' in Saddam's former al-Faw Palace, Marcus finds himself more involved with nation-building than killing 'bad guys'.His tour is not so much about combat, guts and glory as it is about dealing with the vital issues associated with the elections and the Coalition troop draw-down. But he also paints a vivid picture of everyday life set against a backdrop of violence: the heat and dust, attending meetings in the Red Zone, the camaraderie of the cigar club, visits to orphanages and the morale- raising visits of US 'personalities'. There are few Australian books written about the contentious war in Iraq. Red Zone Baghdad presents a rare glimpse into the reality of an officer's war in our time.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This paper begins with a description of an Australian Special Forces raid in Afghanistan where civilians were killed and wounded. The subsequent White Paper prompted several questions: What exactly are 'situations of armed conflict short of conventional war' How does the Australian Defence Force (ADF) 'establish a secure environment in conflict zones' What role should the ADF play in a 'stabilization' situation And what can we do to further develop a 'whole-of-government' effort And have we adequately organized, trained and equipped Australian forces 'for conflicts within societies' To answer these questions, this paper examines how the Australian Government can assist another state government to restore and maintain public security by developing capacity in its security and criminal justice sectors. But this paper is not just about Australia because Australia's experiences are not unlike those being experienced by the United States, the United Kingdom, and others. This is particularly relevant as the Asia-Pacific region is becoming more of an area of an interest to U.S. National Security. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The purpose of this study was to determine whether an Australian Army Association (AAA) should be established. This study determined that an AAA should be established in order to capitalize on a unique alignment of circumstances and to set the organization on a path for success in the future. An AAA should be established with the prime object to create a sense of camaraderie and fraternity between serving members and between former members of the Australian Army. This study also determined that an AAA could also expend funds and become involved in a wide range of activities as the association matures and its membership base grows. It further determined that an AAA could have the following potential sources of income: individual subscriptions, corporate subscriptions, private donations, and the commercial sales of specialized merchandise. It also determined that a lifetime individual membership would be the preferred category of individual membership. This study also determined that there was little reason for an AAA to become directly involved in the areas of advocacy on government policy, welfare advice and advocacy, or in discounted purchases.…
