Fidler came to Canada an avowed Radical; his delusionary dream of America was replaced by a Tory perspective. He reported "Mr. McKenzie and his friends" as being in the pay of the United States, and the Methodists as…striving for the overthrow of British power in Canada. Fidler earned a parish church in Thornhill by answering Bishop Mountains's doctrinal questions, and by reading part of a Greek play and few verses of the Hebrew Bible. "Mrs. F.," arriving by canal boat and steamer, found her new home unacceptable, "and so frequently and loudly complained" that the Fidlers returned to England, in spite of Fidler's own feeling that he might have enjoyed the new life". Waterston. The Travellers ~ Canada to 1900. p56. This copy has a "extra litho'd illustration" laid in on the rear paste down endpaper. Entitled "Cortland Manor House, Croton, N.Y.". No illustrations are called for. 8vo., 19.5cm, The First Edition, [viii],434p., in contemporary half calf, gilt decorated raised bands, gilt border decorations in the panels, black leather label, gilt titles, marbled boards, re-backed with the original spine laid down, some wear on the board edges, a very good sound copy.
