Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Responding to reports of gold discoveries on the Fraser River, thousands of prospectors from California and other points on the Pacific coast crossed the 49th parallel to British territory in 1858. Most returned to San Francisco and Puget Sound later in the same year, blaming their failure to find wealth in the river canyons upon uncooperative officials of the Hudson's Bay Company and the English government. Viewing events from the perspective of California, historians have generally considered the gold rush a failure. In reality, the Fraser River experience was a sustained success, continuing beyond 1858, embracing the vast interior of British Columbia and becoming one of the major developments in Pacific Northwest history. Although an artificial line bisecting forest, mountain, and prairie, the 49th parallel separated distinct regions of law and custom, explaining why Americans were unable to comprehend the true nature of their adventures in British North America.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Residents of Washington, regardless of whether they lived east or west of the Cascades, agreed upon a fundamental point. Their recently-admitted state was, in every possible way, superior to southern California.'-Robert E. Ficken, in Washington StateIn the sequel to his popular Washington Territory, Robert E. Ficken, ably and with characteristic wry humor, describes Washington State's turbulent first decade. With a new railroad system, vast natural resources, an irrigation boom, astounding population growth, and strong foreign capitalist investment, the future looked rosy in 1889. Yet those early years were also marked by inept and corrupt legislation, labor disputes, unbridled criminal activity, strained municipal budgets, and tidelands controversy. Then came America's 1893 economic collapse. Bank clearings plummeted, daily newspapers were reduced to four pages, the lumber industry crashed, money disappeared, and unemployment was rampant. Suffering Washingtonians clamored for public works projects to create jobs. They took their opinions to the polls, electing a Populist governor and majority in both the house and senate. Other contentious political issues included railway regulation and unlimited silver coinage. Finally, after four long years of decline, signs of economic life returned. Newly-elected government officials' fiscally responsible decisions led to renewed outside investment. The Klondike gold rush brought an influx of wealth, and east of the Cascades, the largest crop to date was marketed at prices not seen since the pre-panic years. In 1900, Washington's official population was 517,672--a 48 percent increase over 1890. Furthermore, America's economic orientation was shifting from Europe to Asia. At the turn of the century, possessing an ideal geographic location, the Evergreen State stood poised to take full advantage of new trade opportunities, once again heralding a rosy future.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Established in 1853, Washington remained a territory for 36 years, until admitted into the Union in 1889. Only three other territories created in the American West after 1850 languished longer in dependent status. Because of a dividing geographical barrier (the Cascade Range) and the lack of adequate internal transportation and communication systems, Washington Territory made no practical sense as a political and economic entity. Western Washington was actually a satellite of San Francisco and Eastern Washington of Portland, until railroads finally were completed along the Columbia River and across the Cascades in the mid 1880s. Essentially, Washington was not 'eligible' for statehood until very late in its territorial period when railways unified the region.Though modern scholars have produced worthy biographies and specialized studies for this intriguing period, until now only one previous attempt at a comprehensive history has appeared--H.H. Bancroft's imperfect all-in-one volume, History of Washington, Idaho and Montana (1890). Robert E. Ficken's Washington Territory will long serve as the definitive economic and political history of territorial Washington.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Rufus Woods, editor and publisher of the Wenatchee Daily World for more than forty years, has been called the 'High Priest of the Columbia River.' From his editorial platform, Woods tirelessly promoted Wenatchee and north central Washington and advocated for Columbia River development. He pegged his brightest hopes on a huge dam to be built in the isolated Grand Coulee region.A founding member of the 'Dam University,' Woods--through the World--helped to keep the drive for the structure alive. From 1918 through Grand Coulee's completion in 1941, he was the leading promoter of the largest dam-building project in American history.Utilizing his newspaper and his extensive political contacts at state and national levels, Woods helped convince President Franklin Roosevelt, Congress, and the Bureau of Reclamation that the grandiose scheme was attainable. Where others despaired, he never faltered. Speaking before the 1942 Grand Coulee High School graduating class, Woods proudly boasted of the accomplishment that he helped see to reality. 'So here it stands, a monument to the idea and the power of an idea; a monument to an organization; a monument to cooperation. You, class of 1942, could you come back here in a thousand years hence, you would hear the sojourners talking as they behold this 'slab of concrete,' and you would hear them say, 'Here in 1942, indeed, there once lived a great people.''Woods got his dam, but not the Wenatchee boom he desired. Possible only because of federal financing, those in control imposed a vast maze of power lines emanating from the dam's huge hydroelectric plant. Cities like Portland and Seattle benefited from its power much more than Wenatchee. Even so, Woods's beloved adopted home grew tremendously during his lifetime, and much of that economic development can be attributed to his single-minded efforts.…
