Leonardo of Pisa (ca. 1170-1250), a.k.a. Fibonacci, is justly considered to be the most important mathematician of the Middle Ages, if only for being the first Christian mathematician to systematically explain Arabic numerals. Indeed, the mathematical renaissance in the West began with him according to George Sarton. The first volume contains the the 'Liber Abaci,' devoted to problems of computation including algebraic quadratic problems; here Fibonnaci here introduces Arabic numerals, the fraction bar, and the numerical approach to square roots and cube roots. The second volume contains the 'Practica Geometriae,' devoted to the application of algebra to geometric problems; 'Flos,' written for Frederick II in answer to a number of mathematical problems posed by Magister Johannes; "Letter to Magister Theodorus" developing a general method for the solution of indeterminate problems; and finally the great "Liber quadratorum," described by Vogel as "a first-rate scientific achievement and showing Fibonacci as "a major number theorist." Vogel continues to assert (correctly) that Fibonacci was far ahead of his time, without a successor until 1621, when Bachet made the text of Diophantus available which in turn stimulated Fermat in founding number theory. "In addition to the antique manuscripts, there also undeniably exists, however, a vehicle that, notwithstanding the inadequate and problematic access to the manuscript sources, has spread the text of the Fibonaccian treatise throughout modern and contemporary culture: the well known Italian mathematician and historian of science Baldassarre Boncompagni Ludovisi, in fact, in his brilliant far-reaching project which brought into focus the personality of Fibonacci, as well as his surviving works, realized and published in Rome in 1857 [i.e. THIS EDITION] what can with ample justification be defined the editio princeps of the entire treatise." Despite the flaws in Boncompagni's work, "it of course was a noteworthy editorial operation, especially as it made available in print to a vast number of interested parties a work which had almost fallen into oblivion and that up to that time could be consulted only from its manuscript sources, with all the difficulties and inconvenience which this could entail." It is fair to say that Fibonacci's contributions to mathematics languished unappreciated until the rediscovery of his texts and their presentation in the present -- surprisingly rare -- volumes. Despite its flaws, Boncompagni's edition serves as the basis for only complete translation of the Liber Abici made into a modern language thus far, namely Lawrence E. Sigler's "Fibonacci's Liber Abaci. A Translation into Modern English of Leonardo Pisano's Book of Calculation" (2002). Whereas Sigler corrected some errors he introduced many others, usually on account of inability to understand and effectively translate the Renaissance Latin text. Before Boncompagni's edition, only the "Prologus" and Chapter XV of Fibonacci's Liber Abaci had received a respectful circulation in print that was due to G. Libri's "Histoire des sciences mathématiques en Italie, dépuis la renaissance des lettres, jusqu'à la fin du dixseptième siècle" (Paris, 1838) vol. II, respectively pp. 287-290 and 307-476. First edition. THE BONCOMPAGNI MANUSCRIPT OF FIBONACCI'S LIBER ABACI THE MEDIAEVAL ORIGINS OF MODERN MATHEMATICS. An extraordinary and highly important illustrated sammelband of mediaeval mathematical texts, including the two final and most advanced chapters of the Liber Abaci of Leonardo of Pisa, also known as Fibonacci (c.1170-c.1250), "the first great mathematician of the Christian West" (DSB). This manuscript was owned and bound by one of the most important 19th-century historians of mathematics, Prince Baldassare Boncompagni, who published the first printed edition of Fibonacci's work (1857-62). It is composed of two separate codices, the second dating from the late 15th century and containing the Fibonacci, the first dating from the late 14th century with the other four texts. "Liber Abaci is one of the most important books on mathematics of the Middle Ages. Its effect was enormous in disseminating the Hindu number system and the methods of algebra throughout Europe" (Sigler, Fibonacci's Liber Abaci (2002), p. 3). "The first seven chapters dealt with the notation, explaining the principle of place value, by which the position of a figure determines whether it is a unit, 10, 100, and so forth, and demonstrating the use of the numerals in arithmetical operations. The techniques were then applied to such practical problems as profit margin, barter, money changing, conversion of weights and measures, partnerships, and interest. Most of the work was devoted to speculative mathematics-proportion, the Rule of False Position, extraction of roots, and the properties of numbers, concluding with some geometry and algebra" (Britannica). In the final two chapters, represented in the present manuscript, "Leonardo shows himself to be a master in the application of algebraic methods and an outstanding student of Euclid" (DSB). The earlier codex contains several other essential mathematical texts of the early Middle Ages. Written by the 6th-century Roman philosopher Boethius (c.480-524), De institutione Arithmetica was the principal mathematical textbook of pre-12th century Western Europe, comprising a philosophical discussion of numbers, their relationships and meanings. One of the text's most influential features was its division of the mathematical sciences into arithmetic, music, geometry, and astronomy, which it together designated as the quadrivium. The Compotus of the English statesman, scholastic philosopher, theologian and Bishop of Lincoln Robert Grosseteste (1175-1253) was innovative in that it incorporated Arabic astronomical influences into computistical theory. In it Grosseteste defines 'computus' as a science of counting and dividing time, and his discussion of the solar year is a key contribution to the raging medieval debate around calendar reform. The Computus Manualis of the thirteenth-century German master Johannes De Pulchro Rivo treats the method of carrying out these calendrical calculations on one's fingers, rather than by consulting tables. All of these works are rare, but the Fibonacci is the rarest, and this is probably the only copy in private hands of any substantial part of his Liber Abaci. During Fibonacci's boyhood his father, Guglielmo, a Pisan merchant, was appointed consul over the community of Pisan merchants in the North African port of Bugia (now Bejaia, Algeria). Fibonacci was sent to study calculation with an Arab master. He later went to Egypt, Syria, Greece, Sicily, and Provence, where he studied different numerical systems and methods of calculation" (Britannica). "Liber abaci, or the Book of Calculation, appeared first in 1202, and then again in a second version in 1228. Leonardo's stated intention was to introduce the Hindu number system and its operations to the Italian people. However, Liber abaci is much more than merely an introduction to the Hindu number system and the algorithms for working with it. Liber abaci is an encyclopedic work treating much of the known mathematics of the thirteenth century on arithmetic, algebra, and problem solving. It is, moreover, a theoretical as well as a practical work; the methods employed in Liber abaci Leonardo firmly establishes with Euclid. …
