Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The originality of this volume is to reveal to the reader the fascination of some unfamiliar sensory organs that are sometimes ignored and often misunderstood. These receptors have only recently been identified and their functional specificity is in…some cases still a matter for discussion. The four classes of sensory organs considered here differ widely from one another in many respects. One might even say that the only thing they have in common is that they belong to cold-blooded vertebrates. These classes are: 1. the directionally sensitive lateral-line mechanoreceptors of fishes and amphi bians (Chapter 7); 2. the pseudobranchial organs of some teleosts, equipped with pressoreceptors and at least three other types of receptors (osmo- and chemoreceptors) (Chapter 8); 3. the infrared-sensitive pit organs of some snake families (Chapter 9) ; 4. the various kinds of electroreceptors found in several marine and freshwater fish families (Chapters 2 to 6). The first three classes of receptors mentioned above thus rate only one chapter each, whereas five chapters are devoted to the electroreceptors. Electroreception has aroused enormous interest among physiologists in specialties ranging from molecular biology to animal behavior. The resulting quantity of research and discussion fully justifies this disproportion. However, it cannot be denied that the contents of the volume must appear unbalanced and heterogeneous, yet it should not be perceived as a mere juxtaposition of particular and unrelated cases.

Contemporary red morocco bindings, flat spines gilt in a lattice design with floral gilttooling, beige morocco volume and title labels, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roll-tooled borders on the pastedowns, blue paper endleaves and doublures, gilt dentelle turn-ins, all edges gilt. Joints expertly restored. A handsome copy, elegantly bound in contemporary red morocco with richly gilt-tooled spines, of this edition undertaken by Etienne Fessard, dedicated to the heirs to the kingdom or"enfants de France", the Duke of Berry, the Count of Provence, and the Count of Artois. * Fessard's project was to rival the edition produced by Oudry in the preceding decade, and he indeed surpassed it in the number of illustrations. The whole is executed with great elegance, and this edition could rightly be called, by virtue of its format, "The Little Oudry." Dédiée aux enfants de France, elle est illustrée d'un frontispice par Fessard et de 243 figures hors texte, de 243 vignettes et de 229 culs-de-lampe par Barbin, Bidault, Caresme, Desrais, Houël, Kobell, Leclère, Leprince, Loutherbourg, Meyer et Monnet, gravés par Fessard. Le texte a été gravé par Montulay et Drouët. Quelques feuillets sont brunis, petites décolorations du cuir en marges des premiers et derniers feuillets, mais agréable exemplaire. 1765.

Reliure uniforme en plein maroquin rouge d'époque, dos lisse avec deux étiquettes en cuir vert, triple fillet doré sur les plats, tranches dorées, gardes en papier blue. Ex-libris gravé de '' Henry Callender ''. Quelques très petites et habiles restorations aux coiffes supérieures. Quoique Cohen considère cette édition comme médiocre en comparaison avec l'édition qui porte le nom de l'auteur, ceci est quand même une belle série avec des beaux tirages des nombreuses planches typiques pour le style du livre français du 18ième siècle.
