First French Edition - "In 1873, inspired by the experiments of Fritsch and Hitzig, Ferrier began his detailed, systematic investigation of the cerebral cortex, with the express purpose of testing the opinions of his colleague Hughlings Jackson on the etiology of unilateral epilepsy based upon cortical localization of function. Working mostly with primates, and employing faradic stimulation to the cortex (an important advance over Fritsch and Hitzig's galvanic stimulation), Ferrier confirmed Jackson's views by reproducting experimentally his hypothesized "discharging" and "destroying" lesions; he then went to repeat the experiments of Fritsch and Hitzig, and to chart the precise localization of cortical function - particularly motor function - in dogs, monkeys and other vertebrates. His scheme of localized function was based upon the concepts of 'motor' and 'sensory' regions, but also recognized the necesssity of their interaction. Ferrier's result, first published in the 'West Riding lunatic asylum reports of 1873', were amplified in the 'Fuction of the brain (1876)', which constitutes one of the most significant publications in the field of cortical localization." Sir David Ferrier (1843-1928) may be said to have laid the foundations of our knowledge concerning the localization of cerebral function.…

"Sir David Ferrier's (1843-1928) pioneering experimental work in neurophysiology established the basis for modern neurology and neurosurgery . Using electrical stimulation and cortical ablation, Ferrier showed conclusively that various neurologic functions were controlled by separate parts of the cerebrum and that damage or loss of that part created an irrevocable and particular deficit . Ferrier's work confirmed the idea that there existed in the nervous system a rational and understandable organization. This had immense clinical significance in both the diagnosis and the treatment of diseases of the brain" Grolier Medicine "In 1873, inspired by the experiments of Fritsch and Hitzig, Ferrier began his detailed, systematic investigation of the cerebral cortex, with the express purpose of testing the opinions of his colleague Hughlings Jackson on the etiology of unilateral epilepsy based upon cortical localization of function. Norman 791 ". it was the impact of the cumulated cross-species research brought together in 1876 in 'The Functions of the Brain' that served to confirm the installation of sensory-motor analysis as the dominant paradigm for explanation in both physiology and psychology" (Wozniak, Mind and Body, Exhibition Cat.
