Thomas Fernyhough, the brother who compiled this account, was a noted historian and researcher, and produced a book which is not only one of the rarest contemporary memoirs of the Napoleonic Wars, but one which illuminates the services and tribulations of a typical military family at this most crucial period of British history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbScarce first edition of this fascinating book, highlighting the cost to one family of the Napoleonic Wars. The list of subscribers totals 324 names taking 371 copies. Thomas Fernyhough, "the Survivor", fills much of his volume with the pungent recollections of his brother Robert, who served with the Royal Marines and the Rifle B…rigade. A second edition appeared in 1830. Thomas Fernyhough was one of four brothers from Lichfield who all served: he went as an ensign with the King's Royal Rifle Corps (60th Foot) to Barbados where his health was broken by the conditions. His brothers Henry and John served with the Marines and were equally unfortunate: Henry died in Egypt and John was drowned during the capture of the Spanish first rate Rayo in 1805. The bulk of the volume is taken up with the journals and letters of Robert Fernyhough, responsible for the sketches upon which the attractive lithographs are based, who also started his career with the Marines and fared longer in the service. He was present at the capture of Cape Town in 1806 (giving a vivid account of the amphibious landing in "tremendous surf"), the unsuccessful invasion of the River Plate (1806-7) and the disastrous Walcheren expedition (1809). In August 1810 he applied to join the 95th Rifles and in June 1812 embarked for the Peninsula, where he suffers greatly. Bruce 1728; Mendelssohn I 543; SABIB p. 238; Sabin 48968; Sandler 1235. Contemporary yellowish brown diced calf, decorative gilt spine with low raised bands, dark red label, sides with border of gilt scrolling foliate roll, blind decorative edge roll, sanguine speckled edges, Turkish pattern marbled endpapers. Spine a little rubbed, some streaking to sides, scattered foxing with larger blooms to a few leaves: a handsome copy.

Thomas Fernyhough - "the Survivor" - frames the narrative with the fortunes of his three brothers from Lichfield, all of whom served and suffered in the wars. Thomas himself sailed to Barbados as an ensign in the 60th Foot but was invalided home af…ter a brief, punishing tour. His brother Henry died aged 21 after an injury aboard the Argo during its mission to escort Elfi Bey from Egypt, while John, a lieutenant on HMS Donegal, drowned in 1805 during the capture of the Rayo, leaving a journal covering 53 pages here. The heart of the book is the vivid record of Robert Fernyhough, first in the Marines and later in the 95th Rifles. He was present at the British capture of Cape Town in January 1806, offering a striking account of the hazardous landing, as well as at the River Plate expedition and the Walcheren campaign, where he describes the gruelling bombardment of Flushing. Transferring to the Rifles in 1810, he reached the Peninsula in 1812, narrowly missing Salamanca but witnessing its aftermath. His letters capture both the brutality of the campaign and the unrelenting pace set by Wellington. At one point he is reduced almost to death by illness and then robbed and beaten by French hussars, left stripped and helpless for two days before recovering and returning to England. Robert also supplied the sketches behind the book's lithographs, several drawn hastily under field conditions. First published the previous year, this second edition retains the substantial subscriber list of 324 names (taking 371 copies), including the Marquis of Anglesey, the Marquis of Bute, Sir William Beresford, Sir A.
