Quatro estudantes universitários, que frequentavam a Universidade de Lisboa e a Academia de Amadores de Música, envolveram-se em amores, e em manifestações, convívios culturais e outras actividades contra a ditadura, nos dois anos que precederam a Revolução do 25 de Abril. Um dos estudantes era de Santarém, teve um papel destacado na coluna militar de Salgueiro Maia no derrube da ditadura e acabou por participar na libertação da namorada na Cadeia do Forte de Caxias. Outro estudante era de Évora e morreu na guerra colonial, assassinado pela PIDE. As duas estudantes, suas namoradas, eram filhas de um deputado da ala mais conservadora da Assembleia Nacional. Uma foi presa durante uma luta pelo fim da guerra colonial, na Capela do Rato; a outra foi presa numa reunião da CDE. Os quatro passaram férias em Santarém onde ficaram a conhecer o meio cultural e político da cidade e do Ribatejo. O estudante de Santarém enredou-se numa teia complicada de amores com as duas irmãs e a mãe delas.
