Februar 1786 in Plauen als Sohn eines Superintendenten geboren, besuchte das Gymnasium von Sorau, um dann von 1803 an in Leipzig Philosophie und Philologie zu studieren. Nach Promotion (Jena 1807) und Habilitation (1809 in Leipzig) ging er zunächst seiner akademischen Tätigkeit nach, wechselte aber schon 1810 - 'ungern', wie es heißt - nach Weimar, um dort als Professor am Gymnasium Nachfolger von Franz Passow zu werden. 1817 folgte er einem Ruf aus Jena und wurde dort zunächst außerordentlicher, dann ordentlicher Professor der Philosophie und griechischen Literatur, unterrichtete daneben die Prinzessinnen von Sachsen-Weimar, Auguste und Marie, die er auch auf einer Reise nach St. Petersburg begleitete. Hand starb am 14. März 1851 in Jena. Er verfaßte u.a. eine 'Aesthetik der Tonkunst' (1837-41) und ein 'Lehrbuch des Styls', das aber, wie auch sein 'Tursellinus', zu 'philosophisch angeleg' war, um viel Erfolg zu haben" (richardwolf).- "Proponenda für die Senatsitzung am 22. Einmal den schönsten Dank Ihrer Güte, die mir die Horen zusendete. Nur fand ich nicht das Gewünschte darin, weil es im zweiten Bande steht. Um aber Ihre Güte nicht zu misbrauchen, habe ich mich an die Bibliothek gewendet. Schlüge mir diese es ab, dann ists immer noch Zeit, Sie zu beschweren. Das zweite Wort bittet um Verzeihung oder Entschuldigung bei Ihrer Frau Mutter. Der Auftrag wegen des Sommerlogis ist nicht vernachlässigt worden; allein die Frau v. Buchwald erwiederte, daß die Nachricht über ihr Haus und Garten schon [.] an Ihre Frau Mutter gelangt sey. Dies stellte uns zur Ruhe. Heute aber sagt mir Frau Prof. Batsch, daß die Ihrigen noch auf Nachricht harrten, und sicher haben Sie mich im Verdacht der grössten Nachlässigkeit - doch ohne Schuld.
