Dulau et Co, Soho-Square, Londres, 1811, 2 ff., frontispice, 61 pp. Très rare exemplaire de cette "Lettre à Sophie" sur la fête donnée à l'occasion de l'anniversaire du Roi George III (son fils le prince de Galles étant alors prince-régent en raison de la folie de son père), que l'extraordinaire baron de Géramb (1772-1848) rédigea à la suite de sa "Lettre au Comte Moira", parue en 1810. Ces deux lettres visaient à encourager l'enrôlement de volontaires pour venir soutenir les espagnols contre les français à Cadix. Grièvement blessé lors du siège de Cadix, Ferdinand de Géramb avait été envoyé en Angleterre et financé par la Junte de Cadix pour y obtenir un soutien. Mais ses dépenses inconsidérées l'amèneront à fuir l'Angleterre pour le Danemark, ce qui le conduira à l'incarcération par les français, d'abord à Hambourg puis au donjon de Vincennes. Durant sa captivité, la fréquentation de l'évêque de Troyes et du Père Fontana décideront de sa conversion et de son départ pour la Trappe, où il prendra le nom de Père Marie-Joseph ! Mais les aventures de ce personnage digne de l'Aramis de Dumas, qui connut les terrains de bataille d'Ulm, de Wagram ou de Cadix, ne se termineront pas là. Bel envoi du baron de Géramb "pour la meilleure des Mères, la plus tendre des épouses, en un mot pour Madame Forster". Bon état (qq. usures en marges des feuillets parfois mal coupés, bon exemplaire à belles marges par ailleurs, ex-libris gravé d'un panier de fleurs avec initiales LAC en garde) pour cet exemplaire de l'édition originale, de toute rareté, et dédicacé par son si romanesque auteur ! Signierungen schwach erkennbar: Von Hans Veit Schnorr von Carolsfeld (Thieme-B. XXX, 206) und von W. Böhm (ebenda IV, 191). Anscheinend mussten die Signaturen der Künstler auf Wunsch des Autors abgeschliffen werden. Diese, den sogen. "Almanach"-Kupfern ähnlichen Vignetten zeigen - auch nach Stil und künstlerischer Qualität verschieden - deutlich die Hand zweier Künstler. Sie illustrieren Hauptmomente aus dem Leben bedeutender Mitglieder des Hauses Habsburg. Extremely rare, one of only 25 copies printed: a verse dialogue between Corydon and Alexis, based on the herdsman Corydon's lament for the handsome Alexis in Virgil's second Eclogue. In an exquisite contemporary binding, with an interesting provenance in Parisian high society. - Baron Ferdinand de Géramb (1772-1848), born in France to a Hungarian family, was a fervent counter-revolutionary who served the armies of the Austrian Empire. After first being raised to the role of chamberlain to the Queen of Sicily and then summarily dismissed for his political dealings, he abandoned political life to take holy orders. He subsequently lived out his life among the Trappists, and dedicated this work to the Empress Mother of Russia, Maria Feodorovna; the seal of her son Alexander I appears on the title-page. - On the front flyleaf is the bookplate of Alexis von Rosenberg, Baron de Redé (1922-2004), Parisian socialite, art collector, and the mastermind behind the restoration of the famous Hôtel Lambert. He was also known for wild parties and by his infamous reputation as a kept man for a married male banker. This relationship, which he maintained from the age of nineteen until the death of his partner and patron, allowed Redé, in his own words, the stability to devote himself to art and design, as well as to support his sister after their father and elder brother had taken their own life. Redé's art collection was auctioned at Sotheby's in 2005, a year after his death, though the sale did not include this finely bound volume. - A single copy of this work is listed in institutions, at the British Library, whose catalogue mentions a print run of only 25 copies. It is absent from the majority of online catalogues and bibliographies; no other copy is referenced in the public sales databases. Only the catalogue of the library of the English bookseller, publisher and bibliophile William Pickering (1796-1854), sold by Sotheby's in 1855, mentions a copy, described laconically as "morocco, gilt edges, St. Petersburg, 1808" - quite possibly the present copy. - Faint hints of wear to binding, otherwise in very good condition. - Possibly listed in the catalogue of William Pickering (Sotheby & Wilkinson, London, 1855), part 4, lot 725.
