Bound in calf over boards with gilt lining and gilt decoration to dentelles, spines with raised bands and gilt decoration, title labels onset in red and green morocco with gilt lettering. Volume I - xxxivii + 6 pages of subscribe…rs + 1-519 + 8 pages of Index. Volume II - 1-784 pages + 28 pages of Index. Both volumes have errors in the pagination. The binding is somewhat worn and shabby, with wear to corners and spines, and the front boards of both volumes are loosening though still holding firm. Both volumes still present well, however. There is slight worming to Vol I, more extensive to Vol II, affecting the lower left corner of each leaf for the first half of the volume. There is some damp-staining to a few of the plates in Volume I only. The first volume has large folding maps of Asia, China, India, Persia, Turkey, Africa (which is coloured in outline and has been neatly mended), plus maps of the World, Negroland and Guinea (coloured in outline) and Barbary - a total of 9 - plus copperplates by Hall of Japan, China, India, Palmira, Africa. The second volume has 20 maps of Europe and North and South America by Gibson, Rollos, Williams, Bickham and Prinald, plus 16 copperplates of Athens, Rome, Vesuvius, Stonehenge, Quebec and an American Indian Chief exhorting the tribe to war. The maps of America, Africa, China and Asia are of particular interest.

Containing a collection of fine original watercolours, oil sketches, pencil drawings, and engravings of natural history subjects, costume groups and genre scenes, mostly mounted recto only across around 90 leaves. Original label for… "Louisa Tyrrell / Late widow of G. Fielder / 2 Greek St. Soho" to the front pastedown. The binding, which has some scuffs to the lower board, is detached from the textblock, although the album still sits together neatly as a collection of artworks contained within their attractive original boards, now serving as a folder. The contents with a few loose items, some scattered foxing and toning to the pages, and the odd tear (one larger tear affecting a botanical watercolour on pith), are otherwise in very good order, the artworks remaining clean and the colours bright. A wonderful regency album containing dozens of highly accomplished artworks including five exceptional animal studies in pencil and watercolour signed "B. Fenning" (hare coursing; dappled race horse; grouse shooting with dogs; wolfhound; grouse); nine colourful watercolour costume groups (two signed "D. Lynch, 1829", four of European female traditional costumes, and three incorporating means of transport - one depicting an open carriage with nine flamboyantly dressed female passengers, another showing a bullock drawing carts); eight beautiful botanical scenes incorporating birds and butterflies, highlighted in gilt, some incorporating decoupage elements; four oil views of rural landscapes, and several others in watercolout (likely European); three fine female portraits in pencil (one dated 1840); several watercolours of temples; naval scenes in watercolour and pencil; an attractive pencil drawing of the Menai bridge and several other topographical scenes; and a number of superbly hand-coloured engravings. The album itself originated from Louisa Tyrrell's "Emporium of Fancy" in Soho, an establishment where "every material for ladies fancy work" could be obtained. An appealing, complete early nineteenth-century album with unusually fine contents and a high proportion of original pieces. First edition, issue with the date correctly printed; 8vo, pp. viii, 16, [916]; lexicon in double column; contemporary full calf, rubbed and worn, hinges cracked, cords holding; early grammatical marginalia on flyleaves and endpapers; front free endpaper torn, with loss to the marginalia; still, a nice enough copy…, unrestored, with the approbation leaf, in which George III (to whom the book is dedicated) grants Fenning a license to print his dictionary for a period of 14 years. Little is known of Fenning. He was a compiler of several school texts, including an arithmetic, a geography, and a speller, the last of which had notable popularity in America before Webster. Webster himself was no doubt well acquainted with Fenning's speller, which in London made a 71st edition in 1823. This dictionary contains terms used in mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, architecture, printing, natural history and navigation, with "each word followed by an initial letter to denote the part of speech"--the first time, I believe, in a dictionary. A competent, trustworthy dictionary on "so extensive a plan as to unite the different excellencies of all other English dictionaries." Alston V, 227; Kennedy 6257; Vancil, p. 89. ESTC does not notice this issue with the corrected date.
