The narrative ranges over other matters of interest - difficulties in obtaining fresh food, the difficulty of movement across areas of black cotton soil during the rains, and the work of the King's African Rifles and The Carrier Corps. A final section describes some of the outstanding personalities of the campaign and discusses why it was that von Lettow Vorbeck managed to keep going for so long. A thoughtful book, by a privileged observer.".
