Published in London in 1823 this is the Fourth edition of this excellent account of a visit to the Monastery of La Trappe, home of the Trappist's Monk order, and the surrounding countryside in France by Captain William Dorset Fellowes, THE MONASTERY OF LA TRAPPE La Trappe Abbey or La Grande Trappe is a monastery in Soligny-la-Trappe, Orne, France, The site of the famous La Trappe Abbey was for centuries isolated in a valley surrounded by forests, streams and lakes, 9 miles from Mortagne and 84 miles from Paris, in the Diocese of Séez and the former province of Normandy this is a Large Paper Copy with wide margins measuring 11.5 inches by 8 inches approx., bound in old decorative cloth with leather spine title label, internally BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED with FINE FULL PAGE PLATES CONDITION binding has some rubbing wear to the cloth at spine ends and corners else is in good general condition, internally some mild handling marks to a few pages else contents are in nice condition, this is a large heavy book which may require extra shipping costs above the standard quoted rate.

Binding in very good clean firm condition. Internally, pages and plates in very good clean condition. A very nice copy, in a good solid binding. Size: 8vo.

Later half calf over original marbled boards, spine with gilt-ruled raised bands and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. 12 hand-coloured aquatinted plates (one of which, the "Tomb of Abélard and Héloïse" bound as frontispiece), 2 uncoloured plates, and one mounted vignette. Inner hinge cracked but still strong, f.f.e.p. detached but present, contents lightly toned, generally a very good copy. Apart from being an antiquarian and romantic traveller, Fellowes (1769 - 1852) observed details of the French social life during the recent political system changes, from absolute monarchy, to republic, Napoleonic Empire and back to the attempt to recreate an absolute monarchy. A second edition of the present work was published by Stockdale in the year, a third edition was published by Thomas McLean in 1820, and a fourth in 1823. (Abbey Travel, 86; Tooley, 212).

Early full straight-grain green morocco, covers with wide decorative border in gilt and blind, spine very richly gilt in five compartments between raised bands with title stamped to second, all edges gilt.
