This copy is bound in a highly attractive, tightly executed modern half-crushed red leather over textured cloth boards, presenting exceptionally well. The binding is clean, robust, and square, exhibiting brilliant, unoxidised gilt ruling and lettering across the spine, with raised bands that show scarcely any discernible shelf-wear or rubbing. The top edge is brightly gilded, while the endpapers feature a striking, beautifully preserved marbled or combed-cloud design. Internally, the text block and plates are commendably clean and bright for their age, exhibiting only the faintest occasional offsetting that does not detract from the vivid hand-colouring of the aquatints. Overall, an unusually fresh and crisply preserved example of a handsome nineteenth-century binding. Catalogue Note: First edition. The text is beautifully illustrated with twelve full-page hand-coloured aquatint plates, two black-and-white engraved plates, and one engraved vignette mounted on India paper, rendering a total of fifteen illustrations. The vibrant aquatints perfectly capture the romanticised ruin and topography of post-Napoleonic France, detailing scenes of Abelard and Heloise and the austere surroundings of La Trappe. While earlier travelogues often suffer from heavy foxing and deterioration to the plates, this copy boasts striking preservation of the hand-colouring. The book was evidently rebound in the twentieth century by a skilled binder, elevating its presentation significantly above standard contemporary bindings. First editions of this work, particularly those retaining all required illustrations and exhibiting such a well-executed fine binding, are uncommon on the open market, making this a particularly robust example for the collector.
