Folio. Stapled. Original publisher's printed wrappers. 1f. (title), 3-7, [1] (blank) pp. With publisher's catalogue "Arnold Schönbergs Werke in der Universal-Edition" dated "IV [April] 1925" to verso of lower wrapper. Slightly worn; wrappers partially split. First Edition of this arrangement. Rufer (E), p. 38. Satoh, pp. 13-14.…The full score was published by Universal-Edition in 1920. The text of Herzgewächse (Foliage of the Heart) is by Maurice Maeterlinck, translated by Karl Klammer and Friedrich von Oppeln-Bronikowski. The arranger, Felix Greissle, was Schoenberg's son-in-law. "The vocal part is perhaps the most technically difficult in Schönberg's entire oeuvre; the scope lies initially within the low octave range, but soon leaps much wider. Toward the end, the part calls for the F above the treble staff in quadruple piano, before dropping again into the low octave." Matthias Schmidt, website of the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna. GREISSLE, Felix 1894-1982 (arr.) (illustrator).

Small folio. Full dark green cloth, titling gilt to spine. 1f. (title, performance notes), [3]-72 pp. With "To Anton von Webern" printed to head of first page of music. Binding slightly rubbed. Minor browning to edges; tone row annotations in red and black pencil to first three pages of music. First Edition of this arrangement.…Rufer (E) pp. 60-62. GA B/15, p. 15. "The question of whether sonata and concerto form can be combined in orchestral music was examined by Schönberg for the first time in the violin concerto. The supposed incompatibility of the demand for a densely structured, polyphonic compositional technique and the traditional concessions to the brilliant and effective virtuosity of the solo part was evidently a fundamental compositional incentive for the composer. The beginning of each movement is characterised by two overlapping row constellations as a combination of the original row and the inversion, untransposed or transposed by a fifth respectively. In addition, the row constellation that is based on the principal part is initially presented horizontally each time. The row technique cannot be systematised within the movement and reveals numerous irregularities in the interpretation of the strict methodology. Although Schönberg intended the form of his concerto to have a "classical" three-movement structure, the recapitulation of the first movement, for example, is hardly more than the exposition and its form is altered by a developmental section which extends almost until the end of the movement. In such a construction, the virtuoso shaping of the violin part is ultimately entirely absorbed and also strangely defamiliarised by the thematic work." Arnold Schönberg Center. GREISSLE, Felix 1894-1982, arr. (illustrator).
