Not only do these papers illustrate the multidisciplinarity of SOEP data users; they also give evidence of the global spread of SOEP, with presenters coming from Australia, North America and throughout Europe. At the same time, the conference papers reflect an increasing interest in methodological research as well as cross-national comparisons.German reunification, and the concomitant transition from a socialist to a market driven economy, has always been a subject of great interest for diverse analyses, and SOEP data offers a unique source of information on this process. Two papers in this special issue investigate its effect an the labor market. Gathmann provides estimates of the relative wage loss of older workers during this transition, and shows that older workers lose up to 30% of their earnings through the depreciation of socialist work experience. Anger, an the other hand, focuses on the differences between East and West Germany in unpaid overtime, which is strikingly high in the East. Neuware - Die Studie untersucht erstmals für Gesamtdeutschland und alle beruflichen Qualifikationsniveaus das erst seit kurzem thematisierte Phänomen ausbildungsinadäquater (»unterwertiger«) Beschäftigung. Basierend auf repräsentativen Daten des Sozio-ökonomischen Panels (SOEP) werden Erwerbstätige mit einem in Deutschland erworbenen beruflichen oder Hochschulabschluß betrachtet. Das eigens entwickelte Kategorienschema vergleicht die formale berufliche Qualifikation der Erwerbstätigen mit dem Anforderungsniveau der ausgeübten Tätigkeit. Neben Ausmaß und Struktur (Arbeitsmarktgebiet, Geschlecht, Alter, Wirtschaftsbereich, Einkommen) der unterwertigen Beschäftigung wird auch deren Entwicklung betrachtet: Ein Vergleich der Jahre 1984, 1991 und 1993 sowie multivariate Risiko- und Einkommens-Analysen bietet weitere Aufschlüsse.In Westdeutschland ist rund ein Fünftel der Erwerbstätigen mit Berufsabschluß unterhalb der erworbenen Qualifikation beschäftigt (1993). Mit zunehmendem Bildungsniveau sinkt dieses Risiko. Frauen sind unabhängig vom Bildungsniveau deutlich stärker betroffen. Unterwertige Beschäftigung ist charakteristisch für ältere Personen mit einer abgeschlossenen Berufsausbildung und für jüngere Erwerbstätige mit einem Hochschulabschluß. Selbständige sind auffällig oft unterwertig tätig.In Ostdeutschland ist gar jede vierte Person mit formaler Berufsqualifikation unterwertig beschäftigt. Höher Qualifizierte sind hier stärker betroffen. Frauen sind wiederum häufiger unterwertig beschäftigt; für sie ergeben sich insbesondere bei den höheren Qualifikationsniveaus sehr ungünstige Werte, noch dazu mit sich verschlechterndem Trend. Bei Personen mit abgeschlossener Berufsausbildung können keine auffälligen Alterseffekte festgestellt werden; dagegen sind jüngere Akademiker weitaus stärker betroffen als ältere. Bei Selbständigen mit Hochschulabschluß ergeben sich auffällig hohe Werte an unterwertiger Beschäftigung; dies gilt ebenfalls - völlig untypisch - für Beschäftigte im öffentlichen Dienst.Sowohl in West- als auch in Ostdeutschland geht unterwertige Beschäftigung mit zum Teil massiven Einkommensverlusten einher. Diese fallen wiederum bei Frauen am höchsten aus. Die in der Studie ermittelten Größenordnungen ausbildungsinadäquater bzw. unterwertiger Beschäftigung weisen auf ein Strukturproblem des Bildungssystems hin, das in seinem Ausmaß in Deutschland bislang nicht ausreichend erkannt wurde.
