Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'She hath done what she could: A Discourse addressed to the Ratepayers of St. Marylebone, urging the adoption of The Public Libraries Act, 1855' by Matthew Feilde offers a compelling glimpse into the pivotal debates surrounding the establishment of public libraries in Great Britain. This meticulously reproduced historical text provides a fascinating snapshot of the social and political landscape of the mid-19th century as communities grappled with the revolutionary concept of publicly funded libraries.

Erstausgabe
Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. 8°. 358, (1) p. Defective copy: Lacks the title page. 19th century half calf with morocco letterpiece. Some waterstains, one leaf repaired in the white margin and with small hole (1x0,5cm), with loss of text. Very rare tract by the French Huguenot Duplessis de Mornay, ?the Huguenot's Pope" and an important ally and councilor to Henri IV. The French original was published in 1578; this is the first English edition, dedicated to Robert Dudley, favorite of Elizabeth !, with a ten-page epistle by English Puritan John Feilde (Field). Duplessis and Field agreed in their strict anti-Catholic attitude, which for Field often translated into strident critique of the Church of England. In Duplessis attitude towards authority in the Church, there are clear parallels to the treatment of secular authority in ?Vindiciae contra tyrannos", 1579, whose likely co-author he was.
