A photographic and conceptual meditation on ritual and spirituality, specifically in India: Hindu rites of passage, initiatory dances, fire walks, etc. Contains numerous essays and an interview between the artist and Klaus Ottmann. Laib writes: "a long story lies behind the genesis of this event [held at the Fondazione Merz from 9 April to 7 June 2009]. For Documenta 1987, Mario Merz invited me to exhibit a vase of pollen on a spiral table. That was the beginning of a beautiful and very precious friendship between two artists with, ?I believe, different lives, different ages, but sometimes a very similar way of looking. We were both fascinated, something that has much enriched our lives. So, it will be much more than an exhibition of different objects and works; not an exhibition for an individual artist, it will concern the whole world, the universe and also our very existence. I have had this dream for the whole of my life, since when I tried to be a doctor, realising very quickly that that meant only dealing with the physical body, whereas our life and existence cannot be reduced simply to matter." Hardcover. Zustand: Gut bis sehr gut. 1. Auflage. B : 136 pages, zahlr. Ill. 24 x 30 cm - This generously illustrated book chronicles Laib's 2009 exhibition at the Fondazione Merz, which featured a site-specific installation of his trademark rice and pollen "mountains" paired with a towering ziggurat of beeswax intended to symbolize "the bond of the sky with the earth." In an effort to demonstrate the belief systems underlying Laib's work, the foundation invited 33 Brahmin priests from various South Indian temples to perform their rituals at 33 altars placed in an open-air courtyard. Twice daily for seven days, they lit 33 fires and burned various herbs, fruits, and spices as part of the 1,000-year-old mahayagna. This ritual, which comes from Hindu Vedic traditions, explores both sacrificial and spiritual sentiments. Things from material life are consumed and surrendered so that the continuing cycle of new beginnings remains uninterrupted.…

Softcover. Zustand: gut. 2012. Boundaries, Dynamics and Construction of Traditions in South Asia In deutscher Sprache. pages.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Boundaries, Dynamics and Construction of Traditions in South Asia' explores the dynamic constructions and applications of the concept of 'tradition' within the South Asian context during the ancient and precolonial periods. This collection of essays covers a significant selection of the specialized fields of knowledge that have shaped classical South Asian intellectual history, offering a stimulating array of papers on the different and complex processes employed during the 'invention', construction, preservation and renewal of a given tradition. To that end, the contributors have expertly analysed various key aspects of the development of 'tradition', namely: the textual and practical transmission of traditional canons; the dynamisms and strategies chosen for the renewal of a tradition; its internal and external dialectics; the procedures of its legitimation; the theoretical and pragmatic mechanisms of its survival; and the tensions and criticisms of traditional knowledge systems. Attention has also been paid to problems related to the primacy exercised by highly specialized traditional experts, to monopolies in the transmission of knowledge, to its means of cultural and political justification, and to the connections between a specific traditional field of knowledge and the surrounding social arena.…
