Paris, Charles Angot, 1680, in-8° (20x13cm), veau brun, dos à nerfs orné avec pièce de titre grenat, coupes dorées (reliure de l'époque), quelques usures, manque à la pièce de titre, mouillures, rousseurs, dernier feuillet de garde changé. Ouvrage en quatre parties, respectivement consacrées à la Cochinchine, au Tonquin, à la Chine, au Cambodge et au Ciampà puis au Siam. Il fait suite à un autre volume, publié par le même éditeur, également en 1680, couvrant les années 1672 à 1675. On y trouve des considérations sur le voyage, les peuples, des instructions touchant L'organisation des missions, La première partie parle de l'arrivée de l'évêque de Beryte, des yoyages de Vachet à l'intérieur des provinces de Cochinchine et au Siam, la seconde ; des persécutions subies au Tonquin, la troisième conte les voyages des missionnaires aux indes, à Surate et décrit les royaumes de Camboye et Ciampa, la dernière est consacrée au Siam et à l'établissement des missions. FERMANEL DE FAVERY, Luc, naquit vers 1632 à Rouen, il sortit du séminaire de Saint-Sulpice le 15 octobre 1658, et s'attacha immédiatement à l'uvre des M.-E. Le 14 juin 1660, il fut choisi comme procureur par Mgr Lambert de La Motte, sous son supériorat furent publiés, en 1674 et en 1680, des Relations des missions écrites par les vicaires apostoliques et les missionnaires.

Rare first edition of this account of the state of Christianity in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam by rivals of the Jesuits. The Société des Missions Etrangères, a new apostolic missionary group established in Paris in 1660, was as a society of secular priests who devoted their lives to foreign missions but refrained from taking vows. Under the aegis of the Propaganda Fide, the Société des Missions soon became embroiled in conflicts over territory with the Jesuits. As a result of the patriotism of its priests, the organization's impact extended beyond evangelicalism into the political realm: in addition to facilitating a series of embassies and treaties, it also successfully established a more active trade between Indo-China, the Indies, and France. This Relation brought fresh information about the condition of the mission in different parts of southeastern Asia between 1666 and 1671. It consists of four parts, the first dealing with the mission in Siam and containing descriptions of amongst others Bourbon Island, Madagascar, and Mozambique, the second treating the situation in Cochin-China, the third the mission in Cambodia, and the fourth being devoted to Tonkin, including an account of the work of bishop Lambert de la Motte. (Lambert was a member of the Society's first expedition to the Far East, which had left Europe in 1660.) Fermanel de Favery (c. 1632-88), superior and director of the "S'naire pour les Missions Etrangères," signs the dedicatory epistle to Cardinal de Bo', and consequently Streit, Lach and Van der Kley ascribe authorship to him. The work was reprinted in 1680 and 1684, and an Italian translation, Relatione delle missioni de vescovi vicarii apostolici' alli regni di Siam, Cocincina, Camboia, e Tunkino, was published in Rome in 1677 and 1697. * Cordier I.826 (s.v. First and only Italian translation of a work on the French mission to Siam, Cochinchina, Cambodia and Tonkin, originally written in French. It contains the story of three French missionaries who left Paris around 1660 to go as missionaries to the Far East. One of them died on the journey, but the other two, Louis Chevreuil and Antoine Hainques, made it to Southeast Asia. Chevreuil arrived in 1664 in Siam, and within five months he traveled to Cochinchina, where he had to leave due to persecution of Christians, discussed in the second part of the book. Hainques arrived in Cochinchina in 1665. Chevreuil was sent to Cambodia, which is covered in the third part of the book. The book is based on their letters and reports. Each part mentions the journey the missionaries took and the places they visited, giving descriptions of Mosambique, the islands Madagascar, Réunion and Cape Verde and more.Some minor foxing throughout, the first two leaves and the last leaf slightly soiled, and a small restored tear in the second leaf, otherwise still in good condition.l Cordier, Indosinica, col. 827; ICCU 024 167; cf.
