While written in prose, Farrand plays on words with his title, framing this "Owed" (Ode) as a debt long overdue to the female stenographers, secretaries, and clerks who maintained the nation's legal infrastructure through the draft shortages and logistical strains of World War II. George E. Farrand was a prominent Los Angeles attorney, legal counsel for major California agricultural cooperatives (notably Sunkist), and an influential civic figure in Southern California during the early-to-mid 20th century. Reeta Walker Brooks and her husband, attorney Lawrence Bickford Brooks [1901-1954], were prominent civic leaders in Pasadena. Farrand's personal inscription explicitly ties Mrs. Brooks to this legacy, acknowledging her own prior service in the legal secretarial ranks. A comprehensive search yields no physical or digital copies in OCLC/WorldCat, nor in the institutional catalogs of the Los Angeles County Library, the Los Angeles County Law Library, or UCLA School of Law. Given its private printing and local distribution, this authorial presentation copy may well be the sole surviving witness to the printing. The Only Known Copy. (illustrator).
