Good. - Folio, a two-and-a half page manuscript letter penned on three sides of 12-3/8 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide sheets of cream paper with an attached leaf. The letter penned in Spanish is signed "Alexander" on the last page. The second sheet is mounted from the verso onto…thicker stock with a flap extending over the left border of the first page. Folded several times for mailing with a few tears to the edges of the folds and small holes at the intersection of some of the folds. There is soiling to the slightly chipped edges and staining along the right half of the central fold. Good. An important manuscript letter signed "Alexander" by the great military leader Alexander Farnese. Dated September 4, 1586, the letter was written in anticipation of the Battle of Zutphen on September 22 and shortly before becoming the Duke of Parma following his father's death on September 18th. Farnese heavily relied on German mercenaries to bolster his infantry. Armed with pikes, they were particularly successful in critical sieges such as Grave, Venlo and the destruction of Neuss. However these German mercenaries were chronically underpaid due to the financial difficulties of King Philip II of Spain. The unpaid soldiers frequently formed councils to demand back pay, threatened mutiny and often, as in the 1576 Sack of Antwerp, seized towns for ransom. Farnese had a priority in keeping these mercenaries fed and placated to prevent mass desertion. This letter reflects Farnese's concern for these soldiers. Written in Spanish, the letter is headed "El Principe de Parma y Plasencia Etc". John Lothrop Motley lays the foundation in his "History of the United Netherlands": "On the night of 29th August [1786] Alexander himself entered Zutphen for the purpose of encouraging the garrison by promise of relief, and of ascertaining the position of the enemy by personal observation. His presence as it always did, inspired the soldiers with enthusiasm." In this letter dated September 4 Alexander Farnese orders the commissioner Melchior d' Espinosa to take charge of the final settlement of accounts with the two regiments of the German infantry in the Province of Friesland. He follows up with detailed instructions as to how d' Espinosa should proceed. Farnese orders him to depart with Colonel Francisco Verlugo, the Governor of Friesland, and meet up with commissioner Francisco Vazquez, in Groningen or wherever he may be, to discuss the manner in which the accounts are to be finalized. According to Farnese, Francisco Vazquez has kept account of what has been paid to all of the people who have resided there in support of the war and has the original lists of the two German regiments and the accounts of money they have received from the King. After reviewing these lists, Farnese says that it will be clear from the day they began to serve in the regiments what salaries they have received and what they are entitled to until the end of October next month. He instructs d' Espinosa to use great diligence in discovering what contributions the people have given by way of money, provisions, munitions of war, etc. Farnese says that Governor Verdugo should give orders for all the towns and places in his provinces to account for anything they may have given in support of the war. Once this is done, Farnese requests a joint account and a separate particular one so that it may be known what is owed to captains, officers and soldiers thereof. He states that d' Espinosa should not consider valid the salary of any soldier that has died but instead should keep separate records so that he may order what is to be done in this matter, paying care and attention to what is to be paid to their heirs. He orders that the statements of accounts be delivered to the accountants of the army and that there be a report of what is owed so that it may be paid with great speed. The letter, signed "Alexander", is further signed "Tomo la Razon / Alonso [?]." The biography of Alexander Farnese (1545-1592) is well recorded. From 1586 he had the title of the Duke of Parma, Piacenza and Castro. Historians generally regard him as one of the most brilliant military commanders and diplomats of the 16th century. Historian John Lothrop Motley wrote of him, "Alexander Farnese was a man of the most consummate military genius. He was not merely a brave soldier, but a great commander, whose intellect rose superior to every obstacle.He possessed that rare combination of cool judgment and fiery energy which marks the highest order of military intellect." In his book, "Imperial Spain: 1469-1716" historian John Elliott writes of Farnese: "Parma's genius lay in his ability to combine force with conciliation.". Francisco Verdugo (1537-1595) was a Spanish military commander and Governor of the Dutch provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel. In 1586 he successfully commanded the Spanish forces at the Battle of Zutphen.

Integr…al leaf still attached without the address panel; otherwise in very good condition for a 450-year-old document. He was the son of Pier Luigi Farnese, the Duke of Parma, who was murdered in 1547. At age 14 he was nominated Cardinal by his Grandfather, the then-recently elected Pope Paul III. In later years he was the Papal Legate to Charles V and was responsible for building the Church of Gesu in Rome. In his lifetime he amassed one of the greatest collections of Renaissance Art known to this day.
