Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. viii, 112 pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. St. Clair Streett (October 6, 1893 - September 28, 1970), known as "Bill", was a United States Air Force (USAF) major general and writer who first organized and led the Strategic Air Command (SAC). Streett served as aide to General Billy Mitchell, and was viewed by General of the Air Force Henry H. Arnold as his "troubleshooter". Streett served in France during World War I. In 1920, he was awarded the Mackay Trophy and the Distinguished Flying Cross for leading a squadron of U.S. airmen on a pioneering air voyage from New York City to Nome, Alaska and back. Streett wrote for National Geographic of his squadron's difficulties. Streett assisted Mitchell during the famous bombing demonstration against battleships. He made an exploratory flight to extreme altitude during which he experienced frozen flight controls, and then wrote a story about the adventure for Popular Science Book details the U.S. Army 1920 New York to Nome, Alaska, flight, which was one of the most daring aviation adventures that took place in the summer of 1920. Eight daredevil U.S. Army Air Service fliers made the historic flight from Long Island, New York, to the barren coast on the Bearing Sea and the famous Alaskan gold mining camp. The round trip distance approximated 9,000 miles, much of it over uncharted country. The flight, involved four modified World War I vintage deHavilland DH-4B bombers, and was inspired by Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell, then assistant chief of the Army Air Service, who had spent some time in the wild Alaskan territory in the early 1900s. The flight, if successful, would help to establish an effective aerial route to Alaska and on to Asia. In all it took three months to make the round trip, with 112 actual flying hours. Each leg of the trip is detailed and is accompanied by surviving photographs of the journey. James H. Farmer (illustrator).…

Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Fourth Printing. x, 106 pages. Format is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Color covers. Illustrations. Maps. Stan B. Cohen has been an author and publisher in Missoula for 32 years and has been a founder or board member of several local museums. Although the fight ended in defeat and surrender of the island's American garrison, the battle of Wake, starting just hours after the Pearl Harbor attack, represented the first defense of an American possession during World War II. Waged against tremendous odds, the battle will always hold a special place in American military history. The Battle of Wake Island began simultaneously with the attack on Pearl Harbor naval/air bases in Hawaii and ended on 23 December 1941, with the surrender of the American forces to the Empire of Japan. It was fought on and around the atoll formed by Wake Island and its minor islets of Peale and Wilkes Islands by the air, land, and naval forces of the Japanese Empire against those of the United States, with Marines playing a prominent role on both sides. The island was held by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War theater of World War II; the remaining Japanese garrison on the island surrendered to a detachment of United States Marines on 4 September 1945, after the earlier surrender on the battleship U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay to General Douglas MacArthur. Joseph Astarita (sketches). James Farmer Front Co (illustrator).…

Trade Paperback. Zustand: Very good. Fifth Printing. viii, 120 pages. Oversized book, measuring 11 inches by 8-1/2 inches. Maps. Illustrations. Bibliography. Includes Preface, Introduction, Acknowledgments & Photo Credits, Appendix, Raider's Scrapbook, and Bibliography. Includes eight chapters, including Background, Concept through Training, On Board the Hornet, Planning and Detection, The Mission, Experience in China; Effects of the Raid; and Aftermath and Legacy of the Raid. Also includes seven maps: Military situation in the Pacific; Original Plan of Attack; Tokyo Raiders Training & Repair Sites, January - April 1942; Autographed Map of the Raid; Bomber Routes Over Japan; Japan, China, Siberia, April 1942; and Crash Sites in China. This pictorial history explores the entire gamut of Doolittle's Tokyo Raid--from the Japanese aggressions in the early 1940's to present photographs of survivors. Many of these pictures have never been published before, and wee procured from government and private archives as well as the raiders themselves. The men who participated in this mission wee typical of those many dedicated Americans who have risked and sacrificed their lives for the freedoms of this great nation since its founding in 1776. Stan Cohen is a native of Charleston, West Virginia, and a graduate geologist. After many years as a geologist, and as director of a historical museum, he established Pictorial Histories Publishing Company in Missoula, Montana, in 1976, and has authored or coauthored 71 books and published over 350. He is the director of the Museum of Mountain Flying in Missoula and is involved with several other historical associations. Stan Cohen takes you back to America's first major strike against Japan since Pearl Harbor, 4 months earlier. What an incredible event! On April 18, 1942, after being spotted by a Japanese boat, Jimmy Doolittle and his 16 air crews took off from the USS Hornet to bomb Tokyo and other cities. It was a full 24 hours earlier than they had planned to launch, as well as hundreds of miles away from the intended launch point. Before they left, they all knew that with this sudden change in plans, they did not have enough fuel to fly all the way to friendly areas in China to land safely. They chose to go anyway. After hitting their intended targets, every single plane went down either in the water or in occupied China (except one which managed to land in Russia where the crew was promptly interned). Eight men were captured by the Japanese and only 4 of them survived the 3 1/2 year imprisonment. Japan was shocked and mortified that someone was actually able to hit them on their homeland so unexpectedly. It was a major morale booster for the USA at a time when the Japanese were winning in the Pacific. Mr. Cohen includes some fantastic photos and at the end of the book he includes a follow-up about the surviving crewmembers today. There are also accounts of expeditions that went back to the crash sites and talked to the Chinese people who helped the Raiders make it back home safely. James Farmer (front cover artwork), Richard Knoblo (illustrator). …
