Second edition. Scarce work. Illustrated with a frontispiece and over one hundred in-text engravings. A collection of emblems or allegorical illustrations with accompanying explanatory text, morals, and poems. Displayed in sets of three elements: an icon or image, a motto, and text explaining the connection between the image and motto. This category of book was popular in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Written by Jacob Cats, a Dutch poet, humorist, jurist and politician famous for his emblem books and Robert Farlie, a British author and poet. Translated and edited with additions by Richard Pigot, a Dutch translator and member of the Leyden Society of Netherlands Literature. Illustrated by John Leighton, an English artist notable for his book illustrations and book cover designs. Bound in full tooled morocco. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Light fading to the spine with minor loss to the head of the spine. Front hinge starting but firm with the rear hinge failed resulting in the text block detaching from the spine to the rear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot or handling mark, predominantly to the endpapers. Good. book.
