Illustrated with a frontispiece and over one hundred in-text engravings. A collection of emblems or allegorical illustrations with accompanying explanatory text, morals, and poems. Displayed in sets of three elements: an icon or image, a motto, and text explaining the connection between the image and motto. This category of book was popular in Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Written by Jacob Cats, a Dutch poet, humorist, jurist and politician famous for his emblem books and Robert Farlie, a British author and poet. Translated and edited with additions by Richard Pigot, a Dutch translator and member of the Leyden Society of Netherlands Literature. Illustrated by John Leighton, an English artist notable for his book illustrations and book cover designs. Bound in full tooled morocco. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Light fading to the spine with minor loss to the head of the spine. Front hinge starting but firm with the rear hinge failed resulting in the text block detaching from the spine to the rear. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot or handling mark, predominantly to the endpapers. Good. book.

First edition thus. Translated and edited, with additions, by Richard Pigot. Quarto. pp xvi, 240. Illustrations, freely rendered by John Leighton from designs found in the works of Cats and Farlie. Recent binding of half dark brown morocco with raised bands, gilt devices to spine, marbled boards. All edges gilt. Endpapers renewed. Jacob Cats (1577-1660) was a Dutch poet and statesman and is now best remembered for his emblem books. A bit of foxing here and there. Near fine.

Professionally rebacked, original boards and original spine laid down. Cloth hinge repairs. Light wear to spine and edges, bumping to corners. Gilt decoration to outer edge significantly rubbed and worn. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown, pencil ownership inscription to flyleaf. Small chips to corners of marbled endpapers. Some intermittent light staining to interior, but text remains legible. One short tear to foot of p. 7.

Fine copy. Jacob Cats, 1577-1660, was a Dutch poet. Robert Farlie, Scottish, published emblems in 1638. John Leighton, 1822-1912, was an English illustrator and publisher. Richard Pigot later published another work on emblems.
