His reportage was of a grand scale, for he sought to chronicle no less an event than the clash of ideologies that was the Persian Wars. By his own words, he aimed in the Histories to "preserve the memory of the past by putting on record the astonishing achievements both of our own [Greek] and of the Asiatic peoples; secondly, and more particularly, to show how the two races came into conflict." Literally as events were breakingas the Persian Xerxes clashed with the Spartans, Athenians, and other Greeks and was expelled forever from the birthplace of democracyHerodotus set out on many journeys that were to take him over nearly all the ancient world, to discover why the Greeks and Persians fought; the political persuasions of their leaders; and the lot that fell to the fighting men on both sides. His investigations led to his fascinating discussions of geography, religion, and social and military history, as well as of the human interest topics of personal jealousies, extramarital intrigues, and plain treachery. In short, his wonderfully vivid prose re-creates an immensely important era in Western history. In these pages, Joseph Farber catches the spirit of Herodotus. With his camera in one hand, and Herodotus' Histories in the other, he traveled in Greece and Egypt for three years, photographing the places, temples, statuary, and archeological artifacts related to the text. His view of the ancient world, like Herodotus' own, is panoramicthe snow-covered rugged mountains of Sparta, the gods immortalized in marble, the classic Greek temples on square sunlit hilltops, a Persian gold coin depicting royalty, the pyramids. Mr. Farber has edited the modern Aubrey de Selincourt translation to emphasize the major events that led inevitably to the crushing defeat of the Persians at Salamis and Plataeaand with that defeat, the triumph of democracy over tyranny. Joseph Farber's involvement with photography is of many fruitful years' duration. While at Columbia University, he worked with Edward Steichen at the New York Camera Club, and he was staff photographer at the New York Military Academy. He has photographed widely in the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, and has exhibited oftenmost recently at Dartmouth College with "Native Americans Now."
