Peacock blue buckram with patchwork design stamped in blind on the boards, gilt spine titling, gilt top, edges uncut. Slight fading to spine. A very good copy indeed. 'It is not known who first produced a wine of the claret type, but Ausonius, a fourth-century teacher of grammar, sang of its charms and virtues during the Roman occupation of Gaul. Arnold C6. A catalogue of publications of the Fanfrolico Press, which also contains a short publisher's manifesto. In mid-1928 the Press, the result of a creative partnership forged between Sydney publishers John Kirtley and Jack Lindsay (son of Norman Lindsay), was based in London with Jack Lindsay as proprietor working alongside P.R. Stephensen. By the time the Press closed in 1930, it had published forty-six books with a distinctive design aesthetic, including numerous titles illustrated by Norman Lindsay. An important catalogue relating to arguably the most significant of Australian fine publishing houses.

The first book hand-printed by Jack Lindsay after he moved to Hampstead: "the splendid Miniambs of Herondas, with powerful surreal designs by Alan Odle [was] in marked contrast to the predominant Norman Lindsay style of the Press's earlier work" (Cave p.294).

Lionel Ellis (1903-1988) was a noted painter, wood engraver and teacher. He also illustrated the Fanfrolico Herrick and Catullus.

Provenance: Edward Angas Johnson (1873-1951), Adelaide medical practitioner prominent in public health circles, with his signature inkstamp on the front pastedown and title page. His grandmother was a daughter of George Fife Angas. Signed.
