About the Book:-This book is a charming collection of over 12,500 proverbs, sayings, aphorisms, maxims, emblems and similes from the Northern Indian regions. It contains apart from the Hindi, Urdu, Hindustani and Punjabi sayings others from Marwari, Bhojpuri, Maggah and Trihuti languages. The author made his collection between 1870 and 1880 while his dictionary was being compiled and his object was mainly to illustrate by their laws the real life of the people, and also the methods by which they expressed their thoughts. His assistants numbered about a dozen, one of those above mentioned, worked on to the end with him. The comprehensive title of the work makes it clear that his intention was to cover both the dialects and the lore of Northern India as widely as he could. All the quotations in it belong to the author's collection of proverbial phrases, etc. He has not added to them from outside sources. The form in which they are presented in the vernacular is also his, and so is the system of transliteration, being adapted to that used in his well-known New Hindustani Dictionary. The book is proved to be handy, who wants to use proverbs in speaking and writing. This book was first published in 1886. About the Author:-S. W. Fallon was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1817. He joined the Bengal education department when he was 20 and was made inspector of schools. Later, he got a PhD from Germany's Halle University. He was retired in 1875 and between 1875 and 1879 published his Hindustani-English dictionary. He lived in Delhi and went to England in 1880 where he died on Oct 3, 1880. He achieved some remarkable linguistic feats; even famous British biographical reference works such as Dictionary of National Biography and The Annual Register are devoid of his name. About the Book:-The present work is an attempt to supply the Urdu equivalents of words and phrases commonly occurring in business, in Legislative enactments, and in law proceedings. These equivalents are from the Arabic, the Persian, the Hindi, and the Sanskrit languages, which compose and constitute the Urdu. Besides law technicalities strictly so called, the work comprehends a great many phrases of common speech which are employed in law papers and mercantile transactions in some special sense. The insertion, in a technical Dictionary, of phrases common to technical and ordinary language, is a necessary consequence of the defective character of the Anglo-Hindustani Dictionaries we yet possess. The meanings therein given are by far too few, and do not comprise the different uses of a word. Rarely do we find in them more than one or two of its significations, and more rarely are these discriminated. The translator consults them in vain, for the most part, for synonyms, phrases, or idioms. The materials for this compilation have been derived, in the main, from colloquial intercourse, original law proceedings, and the authorized translations of Legislative enactments and appellate decisions. Such a dictionary is becoming more necessary every day.
