Smedley (18181864) was an English novelist and satirist whose works were often illustrated by George Cruikshank. George Cruikshank (17921878) was among the foremost British caricaturists and illustrators of the nineteenth century, widely celebrated as the "modern Hogarth" for the biting wit and moral insight of his art. Over a long and industrious career he executed more than ten thousand designs, ranging from political and social satires to illustrations for leading writers of his day. His spirited draughtsmanship and acute observation left an enduring imprint on Victorian visual culture, exposing with equal skill the follies of public life and the darker habits of the age, notably the evils of intemperance. Francis Bedford (1799-1883) was a renowned London bookbinder. Cortlandt F. Bishop (1870-1935) was a fascinating man. He was an American pioneer aviator, balloonist, Car driver, book collector, and traveller. As an automotive pioneer, by 1909 he had been arrested for speeding, given driving lessons to locals and been injured in a car crash. He owned an auction house, which was later (after several incarnations) acquired by Sothebys. He had a complex marital life. In his will, he left half of his fortune to his wife and half to his mistress with the stipulation that the two, (whom had never before met), must live together in harmony until one of them died. His book collection was sold by his auction house (American Art AssociationAnderson Galleries) in 1939-1940. 22cm x 14.5cm. .
